"Manning? Fourth-quarter comebacks? Dude learned from me."

WHEN IT COMES TO THE BEST BACKUP QB IN THE NFL, WE'RE 'CHARGING' AHEAD WITH BILLY VOLEK

Jim Sorgi turns 28 today. One cool thing about Sorgi: he has a website. We loved the dude at Wisconsin, but a website? Really? This leads into the second-coolest thing about Sorgi: he allows people to fondly remember The Maytag Repairman, a cultural reference that is gradually sliding away. Essentially, the dude never plays, because Peyton Manning is insanely consistent. (Interestingly, though, this page exists on the Internet.) Got us thinking: who is the best backup QB in the NFL? Pretty relevant topic this season, considering Matt Cassel is leading the Patriots right now (to the playoffs?) He doesn't qualify, by the way. He's currently a starter. Same for Kerry Collins. Here we go.

TOP 5
RANK (YESTERDAY) WHAT WHY
1 (4) BILLY VOLEK Controversial? Maybe. Our logic was that fourth-quarter comeback against the Colts last year in the playoffs, which happened on the road. That's impressive. Fire Norv! Sorry, that slipped out.
2 (6) TODD COLLINS We love Jason Campbell over here, but that Skins' playoff push last year was pretty much all Collins, at least under-center wise. He also makes $3 million a year, which is a lot to ride the pine. Gotta figure the Skins' brass has faith.
3 (7) BYRON LEFTWICH Right now, the Steelers seem like the second-best (or best) team in the AFC, but a few weeks ago, questions about their offensive line were rampant. We're at an airport bar in Miami during a game where Big Ben gets off the turf clutching his shoulder. We wince. Guy next to us, several Millers deep: "It's alright! We got Leftwich!" That's an endorsement.
4 (9) MATT LEINART This guy has roughly as much focus as a small toddler in some respects (or so it seems), but he did win a Heisman Trophy and engineer a dynasty at USC. Cue the peanut gallery: "Your mom could have run that offense!" Naw. Have you met our mom?
5 (11) BRIAN GRIESE We really like Jeff Garcia and the whole "warrior" vibe he brings, but seriously, the Bucs' backup QB job seems to change with the regularity some people change socks. Griese was awesome at Michigan, though.

HONORABLE MENTION
RANK (YESTERDAY) WHAT WHY
19 (180) SENECA WALLACE We really like Wallace. We're not completely sure why, but this probably has a lot to do with it.
138 (1,651) MATT MOORE He looked pretty good spelling Jake Delhomme the last few seasons when he had to. We like dudes from Oregon State, too.

RISING AND FALLING
MOVEMENT WHAT
SAGE ROSENFELS (Do you even consider Schaub the official starter anymore?)
THE PACKERS' OPTIONS (Rodgers' two backups are rooks!)
