Happy Birthday, Shannon Miller!
Happy birthday, Shannon Miller! The most decorated gymnast in American history turns 37 today. The 1993 and 1994 world all-around champion, 1996 Olympic balance beam gold medalist and member of the gold-medal winning "Magnificent Seven" won a total of 16 Olympic and world championship medals, the most by an American gymnast of either gender. Prior to that, at the 1992 Olympics, Miller won five medals (three bronze and two silver) -- the most of any American athlete competing in Barcelona. Miller retired from the sport in 2000 after sustaining an injury during the Olympic trials. She has since been inducted to the USA Gymnastics Hall of Fame, the U.S. Olympic Hall of Fame, the International Gymnastics Hall of Fame and the Women's International Sports Hall of Fame. Miller was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2011 but fought the disease and was declared cancer-free later that year. She remains involved in charities and organizations helping to raise awareness and find a cure. Today Miller is the president of her own health and lifestyle company. She and her husband welcomed their second child in June of 2013.
