Salute to Babe Didrikson Zaharias
As the best golfers in the world squeeze in their final practice rounds today for the 2013 U.S. Women’s Open at Sebonack Golf Club in Southampton, N.Y., we salute a three-time winner of the event on her birthday. Babe Didrikson Zaharias, who was born on June 26, 1911, would have been 102 years old today. She won a total of 31 tournaments as a golf pro, even though she didn’t take up the game seriously until she was 21. She was introduced to the game during the 1932 Olympics, while she was busy winning two golds and a silver in track and field. Zaharias won her first Open title in 1948, her second in 1950 and her third in 1954 after she was diagnosed with cancer and had a colostomy. She died Sept. 27, 1956, at the age of 42.
