Babe Didrikson Zaharias has reason to smile: She was terrific at pretty much any sport you could name.

Babe Didrikson Zaharias turned professional in golf on this date in 1947. She did it in order to accept $300,000 for a series of golf movies. Didrikson Zaharias was an all-around athlete, playing basketball and softball and participating in track and field. She also excelled at diving, roller skating and bowling. She won two golds and a silver in track and field at the 1932 Los Angeles Olympics. Didrikson Zaharias started playing golf in 1936 and was a founding member of the LPGA. She won 41 LPGA titles and 10 major championships.
