Happy birthday, Nikki McCray!
Happy birthday, Nikki McCray! The two-time gold medalist and three-time WNBA All-Star turns 42 today. As a standout guard at Tennessee, McCray led the Lady Vols to three SEC regular-season titles, two conference tournament championships and four NCAA tournament appearances. She went on to play in the now-defunct American Basketball League, where she was named MVP for the 1996-1997 season and led the Columbus Quest to the league championship. She later joined the WNBA and played first for the Washington Mystics. She made the All-Star team in three of her four seasons with the team. McCray later played for the Indiana Fever, Phoenix Mercury, San Antonio Silver Stars and Chicago Sky. The 5-foot-11 guard was a key member of the United States’ gold-medal runs at the 1996 and 2000 Olympics. She retired from the sport in 2006 and has since joined the coaching ranks. She is currently an assistant at South Carolina. She was inducted into the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame in 2012, and she and her husband welcomed their first child, a son, in February.
