This week we head to UConn, where I will be running into some familiar faces.
Just like last year in the NCAA tournament, it is always great to be back on the court with my old high school teammate and friend, Caroline Doty. The only difference now is we’re playing on opposite teams.
A long time ago, I was deciding whether I wanted to go to my public high school or to attend Germantown Academy and play for coach Sherri Retif. GA is one of the girls’ basketball powerhouses around Philadelphia, and having the chance to compete with Caroline on a daily basis was one of the major reasons I decided to attend the school.
When I first started there, I didn’t know anyone well and I was a bit shy, to say the least. But immediately, Caroline and a few of the upperclassmen took me under their wings.
Soon enough I was very comfortable, and Caroline and I actually started a team-wide prank war. No one was safe. Another teammate, Maggie Ebbott, and I once turned Caroline’s backpack inside out and filled it with rocks. Payback hit me when I found all of my school books plastic wrapped into a giant block. To make it to class on time I had to bring the entire thing with me to every class that day. We had some good times in our high school days!
On the court it was just as much fun, and I learned a lot playing with Caroline. Anyone who knows Caroline’s story knows just how tough she is, which is a reason I’ve always looked up to her. The two of us continue to work out together in the summer when we have the chance, and we stay in pretty good touch.
It will be all business when we hit the court Thursday, but it’s always great to see my old backcourt buddy.
