SaberCats down Crush, advance to Conference Championship Game
SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) -- Quarterback Mark Grieb threw nine touchdown passes and the San Jose SaberCats beat the Colorado Crush 76-67 on Saturday to advance to the American Conference Championship game.
Grieb completed 30 of 41 passes for 316 yards for San Jose (13-3 in the regular season). Wide receiver James Roe had 14 catches for 135 yards and five touchdowns and Ben Nelson caught seven passes for 80 yards and three scores.
Leading 69-67 with less than five minutes remaining, the SaberCats took nearly three minutes off the clock on a four-play, 45-yard drive that culminated in a 25-yard scoring pass from Grieb to Nelson.
Quarterback John Dutton threw for 416 yards and 29-of-37 passing for the Crush (9-7 in the regular season), who beat Kansas City 49-42 in the first round of the playoffs. He threw eight scoring passes, including three each to receivers Damian Harrell and Brad Pyatt.
Pyatt caught 11 passes for 208 yards.
The SaberCats will play the winner of Monday night's game between the Los Angeles Avengers and the Chicago Rush next Saturday for the right to compete in ArenaBowl XXI on Sunday, July 29.
