Garcia has two homers as Mexico routs Australia

Associated Press

MEXICO CITY -- Karim Garcia went 4-for-4 with two homers and Mexico eliminated Australia from the World Baseball Classic with a 6-inning, 16-1 victory Wednesday night.

Garcia's three-run homer in the sixth capped a four-run inning and the mercy rule meant Mexico wouldn't need to go the full nine to move on to the second round.

Mexico will face Cuba on Thursday for the first place of Group B. Both teams are headed for San Diego, where Japan and South Korea await in the next round.

Edgar Gonzalez had three RBIs for Mexico, and Jorge Campillo pitched four shutout innings to earn the victory.

Mexico lost its first game of the WBC to Australia, 17-7.

Australia starter David Welch allowed four runs and four hits and three innings.
