Dice-K, Japan beat U.S. to go to WBC finals
LOS ANGELES -- For the second time in three years, the United States was beaten at its own game on its own turf.Maybe baseball just ain't America's sport anymore.
• The Japanese scored five runs in the fourth inning and hold on to advance to the WBC finals for the second straight time, where they will look to defend their title from 2006 against Korea.
• Roy Oswalt took the loss for the U.S., allowing four earned runs in 3 2/3 innings. Oswalt has lasted less than four innings seven times as a starter in his MLB career, and the four ERs allowed vs. Japan matches the most he has given up in less than four innings pitched as an MLB starter (Sept. 28, 2001 vs. Cubs).
• The U.S. stranded 10 batters and struck out 10 times. Jimmy Rollins was 4-for-4 while the rest of the lineup went just 5-for-32 (.156).
• The Americans finished the WBC with a 6.12 ERA, second worst among the final eight teams, and gave up at least five earned runs in seven of eight games.
