Slice cuts down Thompson in three rounds to remain undefeated
Kimbo Slices Up Thompson
NEWARK, N.J. -- Internet fighting sensation Kimbo Slice remained unbeaten Saturday with a technical knockout victory over James (The Colossus) Thompson at EliteXC's event at the Prudential Center.
The card was the first live mixed martial arts competition broadcast over network television. CBS viewers saw Slice (3-0), who has risen from backyard brawler to the cover of ESPN The Magazine in a few years, land a haymaker to Thompson's ear early in the third round. The blow staggered Thompson (16-9) and Slice landed a few more blows before referee Dan Miragliotta put a stop to the fight 36 seconds into the third round. Thompson won the first two rounds, but left the ring with his bloody left ear dangling grotesquely. Nothing was decided in a middleweight title bout between Robbie Lawler (15-4, 1 NC) and Scott Smith (15-4, 1 NC). After fighting a classic back-and-forth second round, the fight was ruled a no contest after Lawler accidentally poked Smith in the eye at 3:28 of the third. Perhaps the most exciting match of the evening belonged to Gina Carano (6-0) and Kaitlin Young (4-2). Carano, who did not make weight and reportedly had to give 12 percent of her purse to Young, landed several effective combinations in the second round and opened up a cut near Young's left eye. After examination between rounds, ringside doctors ruled she could not continue. In another notable bout, Joe Villasenor (26-6) stopped Phil Baroni (10-10) with strikes following a standing guillotine at 1:11 of the first round. Brad McCray covers MMA for Sherdog.com.
