Rk.: The author's ranking of that pitcher for that day only. T: Pitcher throws left-handed or right-handed. Opp: The pitcher's opponent for the day. QR: "Quality Rating," or the starting pitcher's matchup rating -- separate from the author's ranking -- which accounts for past history (three years' worth as well as past 21 days), opponent and ballpark. OPS is the primary statistic used in the calculation. Ratings range from 1-10, with 10 representing the best possible matchup, statistically speaking, and 1 representing the worst. So, for example, a 10 is a must-start rating, while a 1 should be avoided (if possible); a 1-2 is poor, 3-4 is fair, 5-6 is average, 7-8 is very good and 9-10 is excellent. W-L: Pitcher's win-loss record. ERA: Pitcher's earned run average. WHIP: Pitcher's average number of walks plus hits surrendered per inning.
Mass' Rankings Notes: Saturday
Since joining the Atlanta Braves rotation on July 31, Kris Medlen has gone 6-0 with an 0.54 ERA and a .206 batting average against. He's also thrown 50 strikeouts versus only five walks over that time. There's not a hotter pitcher in the game right now.
David Price has had some struggles against the Texas Rangers, with a 1-4 record and 5.98 ERA lifetime against them. It's hard to go against the American League's win leader in this one, though.
CC Sabathia is 16-3 with a 2.97 ERA against the Baltimore Orioles, but with the New York Yankees in the midst of a near freefall in the standings, we're not quite sure how much that matters right now. After all, Sabathia has yet to beat the O's in 2012.
Chris Capuano is 1-6 with a 5.58 ERA against the San Francisco Giants, including an 8-4 loss to the divisional rivals on August 22. C.J. Wilson has gone 2-0 in his last four, thanks to his offense which overcame the 7.84 ERA the pitcher has managed in those outings. It's impossible to put either man in the Saturday top 10.
Jeff Samardzija may be soon shut down for the season as he has already thrown almost twice as many innings in 2012 as he did in 2011. That won't affect his performance in this contest with the Pirates, who have never beaten him. He's 2-0 with an 0.82 ERA against the Bucs.
Brett Anderson has faced 70 batters so far in 2012 and only 14 have reached base safely, resulting in a 0.90 ERA and three victories in three starts since returning from Tommy John surgery. Eventually, he may well get beaten up a bit, but it's not likely against a Seattle Mariners team hitting .220 over the last two weeks.
Bronson Arroyo has gone 4-0 in his last five starts with a 2.62 ERA and stellar .202 batting average against. He's now getting a second chance to stymie the Houston Astros, who he led to one run and three hits last Sunday. Don't expect him to fail.
Cole De Vries is only 1-3 with a 6.68 ERA at home this season, a far cry from his 2.92 ERA on the road. That makes him a risky selection for streamers despite his having won two straight decisions.

Mass' Rankings Notes: Sunday
Believe it or not, Johnny Cueto has not mastered the art of beating Houston over the years. He is just 2-5 against the Astros lifetime, with a 3.59 ERA. That's one reason why we've put Clayton Kershaw and his 1.39 ERA versus San Francisco ahead of Cincinnati's ace for Sunday.
Ian Kennedy is 6-1 lifetime when facing the San Diego Padres, who even with a recent hot streak are hitting just .240 for the season at home. We'll give him the slight edge over pitchers like Matt Harrison and his 5.55 career ERA when facing the Tampa Bay Rays.
Rounding out the top 10: Clay Buchholz is 8-3 with 2.55 ERA against the Toronto Blue Jays and has gone 6-2 at Fenway Park in 2012. Anibal Sanchez has finally seemed to settle into life in the American League, having a 0.92 ERA over his last three starts. He should keep things close in his matchup against Zack Greinke and the Los Angeles Angels
Zach Britton is 1-2 with a 6.95 ERA lifetime against the New York Yankees, but is 4-0 in his last four starts with a .204 BAA. Still, his only loss in 2012 was a 12-3 blowout at the hands of the pinstripes. This might be one to sit him out.
Ricky Nolasco is 1-5 with a 3.88 ERA when facing the Washington Nationals. He goes up against Edwin Jackson, 1-5 with a 6.00 ERA against the Miami Marlins. Still, while that closes the gap a bit, we're going to stick with the pitcher going at home and the lineup hitting .316 over the last 14 days.
Tyler Cloyd now is 2-for-2 in terms of quality starts and his first major league win was at the expense of the Cincinnati Reds; not too shabby. He's going up against Colorado in start No. 3, and they're the third-highest scoring team in the National League, but not on the road where they've scored just 36 percent of their runs this season.
Edgar Gonzalez has done well to make it all the way back to the major leagues after being released by two teams and ending up in Mexico. However, he's pitching in only his third big league contest since the end of the 2009 season with the league's worst-hitting lineup behind him. Why court disaster?

• Matt Cain is 4-1 with a 2.50 ERA in his last 8 starts against the Dodgers dating back to 2010.
• Andre Ethier has faced Matt Cain more than he's faced any other pitcher in MLB. Ethier is 25 for 53 (.472 BA) against Cain in his career, including 3 for 6 in 2012.
• Kris Medlen leads MLB with a 0.59 ERA since the All-Star break.
• Ross Detwiler is 7-2 with a 2.50 ERA at home this season compared to 2-4 with a 4.01 ERA on the road. He has also done well against the Marlins this season, going 2-0 with a 1.98 ERA against them.

• Lance Berkman is 1-for-15 (.067) with 3 strikeouts and a .125 OBP against Shaun Marcum for his career.
Brandon McCarthy, P, Athletics: A scary situation as the pitcher underwent surgery following getting hit in the head with a line drive. Hopefully, he will make a full recovery from a brain contusion and skull fracture.
Jered Weaver, P, Angels: Suffering from tendinitis in his right biceps and will be scratched from his scheduled weekend start.
Chris Archer, P, Rays: Promoted to the major leagues and will join the bullpen for now. Eventually, he will likely get a start or two down the stretch with Alex Cobb probably headed for a September shutdown.
Aramis Ramirez, 3B, Brewers: Tweaked his lower back and missed Thursday's game as a result. Consider him day-to-day for the time being, but he should be able to play this weekend.
Mike Napoli, C, Rangers: Still not ready to resume play as he has had difficulty running the bases in workout aimed at getting the slugger back in the Texas lineup.
Lance Berkman, 1B, Cardinals: May retire after the season due to his chronic knee issues. Certainly, his days as a keeper league fixture are well behind him.
