Fantasy Game Notes for Thursday: American League
Miller Park (indoor/retractable roof) 1:05 p.m. ET
Dustin Moseley, RHP (1-0) versus Jeremy Sowers, LHP (0-0)

Notable Injuries: Victor Martinez, C (quadriceps, DTD)

Game Story: One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight! Schlemiel! Schlemazl … Sorry, but I'm really getting into this Milwaukee thing with the Indians. And the definition of irony? The Brewers got rained out in Florida. Nice, baseball gods. The Indians' hitters have hit well against Moseley in limited at-bats, so start them all. So far this year, the Angels have gotten on base well against lefties, but without power. Second-tier Angels like Orlando Cabrera and Garret Anderson hit lefties as well as they do righties. Given Sowers' five walks last week, start all Angels.

Fenway Park (outdoor) 4:05 p.m. ET (100 percent chance of snow/sleet, high of 37 degrees)
Jarrod Washburn, LHP (0-0) versus Tim Wakefield, RHP (0-1)

Notable Injuries: none

Game Story: This one likely doesn't get played. The big Red Sox batters hit Washburn well, but more importantly, guys like Julio Lugo (8-for-20 against Washburn) and Coco Crisp (11-for-21, one home run) have him figured out, and the bases should be full all day. I'd love to be able to look at the Mariners' past performances against Wakefield and make conclusions, but we all know it comes down to how Wakefield's knuckler is knuckling. If it's high, let it fly; if it's low, let it go. If you want to go trolling for a Mariner, Jose Lopez has decent numbers.

Camden Yards (outdoor) 7:05 p.m. ET (partly cloudy, low of 40 degrees)
Gil Meche, RHP (1-1) versus Steve Trachsel, RHP (0-0)

Notable Injuries: Ramon Hernandez, C (ribs, DL)

Game Story: Meche so far is justifying at least some of his contract, but this game probably won't help. Lots of Orioles batters hit him well, including Brian Roberts (.520 BA in 25 at-bats, one home run) and Melvin Mora (.368 BA in 19 at-bats, one home run), and the rest should help. The Orioles to sit are Kevin Millar and Aubrey Huff. But lest you think this game could become lopsided, the Orioles are trotting out Trachsel, who pitched nicely against New York, but likely won't against Mike Sweeney and Mark Grudzielanek.

Rogers Centre (indoor/retractable roof) 7:07 p.m. ET
Mike Maroth, LHP (1-0) versus Tomo Ohka, RHP (0-1)

Notable Injuries: none

Game Story: Maroth's current ERA (7.20) and WHIP (1.40) sound about right, but don't expect another win soon. The Blue Jays' batters have great success against Maroth, and the two you want to pick up and start are Reed Johnson and Royce Clayton. Yes, that Royce Clayton. Despite his recent success, you want to ask Aaron Hill (0-for-13) to sit this one out. As for the Blue Jays, I am dumbstruck as to major league teams' infatuation with Ohka. He's so mediocre that he's the one pitcher Placido Polanco hits for power (7-for-24, two home runs).

Metrodome (indoor) 8:10 p.m. ET
Casey Fossum, LHP (0-1) versus Carlos Silva, RHP (0-1)

Notable Injuries: none

Game Story: It's not even worth laying out the numbers. Start all Twins against Fossum on Thursday. Silva is one of those guys who puts the ball in play and lets the defense take care of things. However, he puts so many balls in play that a bunch get through and then men get on base and then other men knock them in and then … You get the picture. In addition to starting the Devil Rays' bigger names, think about Ty Wigginton.

Fantasy Game Notes for Thursday: National League

Shea Stadium (outdoor) 7:10 p.m. ET (mostly cloudy, low of 40 degrees)
Jamie Moyer, LHP (1-0) versus Tom Glavine, LHP (1-1)

Notable Injuries: none

Game Story: We've had presidential campaigns with all candidates younger than Thursday's starters. After a 4:30 dinner at Picadilly Cafeteria, Moyer should then, well, get pummeled. Most of the big-name Mets hit him well, so start all Mets and sit Moyer. As for Glavine, usually I look at matchups and have to make decisions based on five at-bats. With Glavine's 20-year career, there are individual matchups with more than 60 at-bats. Heck, pitcher Jon Lieber has 15 at-bats against him. Besides the Phillies' stars, consider starting Pat Burrell and Wes Helms.

Turner Field (outdoor) 7:35 p.m. ET (mostly clear, low of 43 degrees)
Jason Bergmann, RHP (0-1) versus John Smoltz, RHP (1-0)

Notable Injuries: none

Game Story: Before you discount Bergmann's chances against Atlanta's hitters, realize he has pitched well against them. He has limited Jeff Francoeur to 1-for-11, Chipper Jones to 2-for-10 and Andruw Jones to 0-for-7. You'll start the Jones Boys, but consider giving Francoeur a rest and playing Matt Diaz (3-for-4). As for the Nationals' batters, they're not that good in general, and Smoltz will take advantage. The only possibly available Nat you may want to play would be Austin Kearns (1-for-11, one home run), but I wouldn't drop anyone important for him.
