Play Like the Pros: Craig Monroe still desirable
• Brian Giles: $1 Ron Shandler
The Cheese Stands Alone: Only one bid in ESPNX this week, and it's for the hot-hitting Brian Giles. Giles has just seven home runs on the season, but five have come since August 10th (granted, they were bunched together in a three-day period against Cincinnati), and he has eight multi-hit games since then thrown in for good measure.
• Jeff DaVanon: $1 Sam Walker, "Fantasyland"
"I'm forever yours...Faithfully": DaVanon was welcomed back to the Arizona lineup with open arms and an unconditional release. Oakland scooped him up (it was their turn in the "Reclamation Rotation" they share with Cincinnati and San Diego) and their timing couldn't have been better, as Travis Buck went on the DL, and they were in need -- once again -- of an extra outfielder. DaVanon has played every game since August 18th, and has failed to get a hit in only one of them, scoring six runs in that period, and rewarding Oakland for their gamble.
• James Hoey: $1 Ron Shandler, BaseballHQ MO< Trippin on Them Hoeys: Four days ago, Hoey had a 3.38 ERA and a 0.88 WHIP. Then he ran into the Twins and Rangers, and he now sports a 7.71 ERA and 1.61 WHIP. His averages should fall again, and his minor league numbers are ridiculously good; in a stop at Double-A this season, Hoey had a 0.00 ERA in 19 innings. He can strike out a batter per inning, if not more, and -- despite what his numbers look like now -- can sport a low WHIP and ERA for Ron's BaseballHQ team.
• Chris Bootcheck: $0 Shandler
• Joel Guzman: $1 Mike Siano, MLB.com
Shuffling: Guzman is another Tampa Bay prospect who has his path blocked to the majors. He was called up a week ago and will most likely spell Carlos Pena at first, and any number of players at second base or DH. He has a little bit of power, and a smidgen of speed, but his playing time will be limited as Tampa Bay has solid starters at every other position.
• Craig Monroe: $14 Brian Walton, CREATiVESPORTS.com ($13, $11, $6, $0)
Semper Paratus: Being (somewhat) unexpectedly discarded by the Tigers, Monroe was sent to the cozy confines of Wrigley for a player to be named later. He will have a little trouble finding regular playing time in the Chicago outfield, as they have been one of the hotter teams in baseball with Jacque Jones patrolling center and Alfonso Soriano progressing quickly in his rehab, but he has the skill to take away at-bats here and there, chipping away at playing time until he re-establishes himself as the player who hit nearly 50 home runs in the past two seasons combined.
• Ian Stewart: $15 Scott Pianowski, FantasyGuru.com ($14)
• Jorge Cantu: $1 Trace Wood, LongGandhi.com
Those who forget history: In one of the more surprising non-bidding wars of the season, Trace Wood puts the only bid on Jorge Cantu. Have we learned nothing from Brandon Phillips, Josh Hamilton, Bronson Arroyo and Eddie Guardado? When Wayne Krivsky brings in a reclamation project, they lie in wait for about three weeks, then somehow find their way into the starting lineup, rotation, or closer role. In two weeks, chances are that Trace may have himself a starter at second (with Phillips trying out his natural position of shortstop), or a utility player who will bounce from first to third, spelling and platooning with Juan Encarnacion and Scott Hatteberg.
• Kevin Frandsen: $1 Phil Hertz, BaseballHQ
• Matt Kata: $1 Pianowski
Forever Young: Kata's name always seems to pop up during early FAAB as a favorite to steal at-bats when an injury occurs. And he always seems to be gaining steam in that battle, only to be the victim of another callup or a player returning from injury before he was expected. He's now 29, and, it seems, destined to bounce from team to team when they need infield depth, leaving a trail of DFAs (Designated For Assignment) in his wake. He has started the last two games for Pittsburgh, but if he doesn't get hot, he will most likely be relegated to the bench in favor of one of the Pirates' many multi-position-eligible utility players.
• Eric Stults: $1 Walton
• Guillermo Rodriguez: $0 Cory Schwartz, MLB.com
• Jason Wood: $0 Schwartz
Older than Kata!: The 37 year-old Wood is one of those heart-warming stories of a career minor leaguer finally making the big-league club out of spring training. And if you end it there, it's just lovely. Wood, however, has been relegated to bench duty for Florida, and has accumulated just 97 at-bats in 77 games. Still, he has not been send to the minors, and figures to see at least a bit more playing time as the Marlins open up the roster for September and let some of the non-regulars play.
• Pedo Feliciano: $0 Peter Kreutzer, AskRotoman.com
• Cameron Maybin: $1 Alex Cushing, MLB.com
• Luis Castillo: $1 Cushing
• Joe Saunders: $1 Cushing
That Cushing sound you hear means it's working: MLB.com's Alex Cushing scores an interesting cadre of players this week, each with his own unique way of contributing to his fantasy team.
The Rookie: Cameron Maybin has two doubles and a home run, and will most likely take over in the outfield with both Gary sheffield and Craig Monroe out of Detroit's lineup.
The Revitalized Speedster: Castillo has five steals since coming over to the Mets, including two in his last two games. With only nine steals while in Minnesota, Castillo is definitely letting his presence be known on the basepaths in his new home.
The Guy Who is Praying For Ervin Santana to Just Go Back to the PCL: Saunders has been Plan B for the Angels for a good portion of the year, even though he really did very little to make the Angels justify his random demotions. The first time he was sent packing, Saunders had a 1.96 ERA. He now sports a 3.25 ERA and 1.32 WHIP. There's not much else he can do to prove he belongs in the Los Angeles of Anaheim rotation, and he should stick for the rest of the season.
• Yunel Escobar: $1 Irwin Zwilling/Lenny Melnick, LennyMelnickFantasyBaseball.com
One and out: Edgar Renteria's return to the lineup lasted exactly one pitch. And now Escobar finds himself a starter again for at least two weeks.
