Feb. 29 is Leap Day, so let's jump to some conclusions about which players will enjoy the biggest rebounding advantages on Friday. Expect Samuel Dalembert to dominate an undersized Warriors team that is without Andris Biedrins. Shane Battier (9.5 rebounds his past two games) could clean the glass against the Grizzlies, along with several other Rockets auditioning for Yao Ming's minutes. & The Celtics should have no trouble with the declawed Bobcats, who are missing Gerald Wallace and maybe Jason Richardson, but that could mean either big games or lots of pine time for the Celtics' stars. Rajon Rondo is a good bet for double-digit assists. Raymond Felton has been taking on more of the scoring load (16.2 points and 7.0 assists his past five games), but is shooting only 38 percent from the field in that time. & The Cavaliers-Timberwolves game is another mismatch, especially given the Wolves' 2-23 road record. Despite a crowded frontcourt, expect Zydrunas Ilgauskas to coexist with Ben Wallace and Joe Smith for now. Wally Szczerbiak is averaging 11.7 points and 2 3-pointers in his first three games with Cleveland. Rashad McCants is averaging 18.6 points while shooting 50 percent from the field his past five games for Minnesota. & The Hawks will be rude hosts to the Knicks (6-22 away record), so upgrade your expectations for Joe Johnson, Josh Smith, Al Horford (averaging 10.4 points and 10.4 rebounds his past five games), Mike Bibby (tied his season high with 24 points in Wednesday's win over the Kings) and Josh Childress (25 points on Wednesday).
Yao-OW! Yao Ming's broken foot hurts the Rockets' playoff chances, but it could provide an opportunity for several Houston players. Luis Scola (13.0 points and 6.6 rebounds in 28.8 minutes his last five games) could be the biggest beneficiary, but don't overlook Carl Landry (10.4 points and 7.0 rebounds in 22.2 minutes his last five games), Luther Head (a guard, but an offensive threat, as evidenced by his 18 points on Tuesday), and even the timeless Dikembe Mutombo (four points, six rebounds and four blocks in 23 minutes on Tuesday). All of these guys are worth a look against the Grizzlies on Friday. & The Heat and SuperSonics both allow more than 100 points per game, which could make for timely pickups of Miami's Udonis Haslem, Mark Blount, and Ricky Davis. (Seattle allows seven made 3-pointers per game.) Consider Sonics such as Jeff Green (coming off a career-high 21 points on Tuesday and averaging 7.4 rebounds his past five games), Nick Collison (20 points and 13 boards on Tuesday), and Luke Ridnour (15 assists on Tuesday) if Earl Watson remains ill. & Delonte West scored a season-high 20 points on Wednesday, which is all the more impressive because it came against the Celtics. West will have little competition for the Cleveland point guard job and should be grabbed in all leagues. & Tyrus Thomas has been a very popular pickup this week after averaging 12.2 points, 7.6 rebounds and 2.0 blocks his past five games, but don't overlook Joakim Noah (6.2 points, 5.6 rebounds, 1.4 steals and 1.2 blocks in that span). & Travis Diener's season-high 22 points (plus nine assists) Wednesday could get him noticed, especially with Jamaal Tinsley out indefinitely. & Willie Green is averaging 20.5 points his past four games and has a favorable matchup against the Warriors on Friday.
