Start 'em, sit 'em

Monday is going to be a fun night for those fantasy owners lucky enough to have Chris Paul or any other Hornet on their roster. Against the Knicks, a point guard like s Paul, who can both shoot from outside and get to the rim, can basically do whatever he wants on offense. As such, I would start any of the five Hornets starters I owned, and if I needed 3-pointers, I might even consider picking up and starting Jannero Pargo. As far as Paul is concerned, he has the added bonus of going up against a team that gives up 7.9 steals per game. Expect the Hornets to force more than that Monday night. Put it this way: If the over/under on Chris Paul's steals in this game is three, I'm taking the over. … Jason Kidd's numbers have looked pretty good in his six games with the Mavericks, but his points and assists have been inflated by games against terrible defenses like Sacramento, Minnesota and Memphis. It's one thing to rack up 17 assists against Sebastian Telfair; it's an entirely different situation to have to face Deron Williams. Though he's still a top talent, I'd sit Kidd against Utah on Monday night. He looked bad enough against Chris Paul last week (five assists to six turnovers) that I'd bench him against elite point guards until he shows he can still put up numbers against superior players. … Josh Howard, on the other hand, is a must-start against the Jazz. He has averaged 32.0 points and 9.0 rebounds on 59 percent shooting in two games against the Jazz this season, and I'm not holding out any hope that they'll be able to defend him this time around.

Waiver-wire pickups

As I mentioned above, Pargo could be a good start for you Monday if you need 3-pointers. He has hit nine 3s in his past four games, and in recent wins over Phoenix and Utah, Pargo has scored 22 and 15 points, respectively. He's completely unowned, so he's certainly available in your league if you are looking for a cheap source of 3s and scoring. … A lot of people already have jumped on his bandwagon, but the Clippers' Al Thornton is worth owning in just about every type of fantasy league right now. He had been in double figures in 10 straight games until Saturday night, and he was averaging 19.4 points, 7.1 rebounds and 0.8 steals on 52-percent shooting from the floor over that stretch. With Chris Kaman and Tim Thomas both a little banged up, the Clips will have to rely on him even more against the Sixers on Monday night. He's still available in almost 25 percent of fantasy leagues, so pick him up immediately if he's available in yours. … In the only-if-you-need-assists category, Sam Cassell's exodus out of L.A. means the Clippers will have to give more minutes to Brevin Knight. On Friday night in Denver, he got 35 minutes and filled the sheet with 12 dimes. He could be a good source of steals over the coming weeks, as well. You could do a lot worse, and he should definitely keep getting minutes because now he's the only real point guard on the Clips' roster.
