Background
• This is the 32nd race of 36 for the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series in 2008 and the sixth race of the "Chase for the Championship."
• This is the sixth of six short-track races of the season.
• This is the 120th time the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series has competed at Martinsville since 1949.
• Martinsville is a .526-mile oval with 12-degree banking in the corners and no banking on the straightaways.
• There are 45 drivers on the pre-entry list to compete for one of 43 starting slots in Sunday's 500-lap, 263-mile race. Of those 45 entrants, 10 must get into Sunday's field based on qualifying times: Sterling Marlin, Tony Raines, Chad McCumbee, Bill Elliott, Mike Bliss, Kyle Petty, AJ Allmendinger, Derrike Cope, Sam Hornish Jr. and Ken Schrader.
• Elliott has access to a past champion's provisional if needed.
• These teams are NOT locked in past the next race because the owner's points change after each race:
32. Scott Riggs/Haas CNC Racing: 2,489 points, 165 points ahead of 36th
33. Dave Blaney/Bill Davis Racing: 2,469, +145
34. Robby Gordon/RGM: 2,402, +78
35. Scott Speed/Red Bull Racing: 2,387, +63
These teams/drivers must qualify by speed but are close to the top 35:
36. Mike Bliss/Waltrip Racing: 2,324, 63 points out of 35th
37. Sam Hornish Jr./Penske Racing: 2387 -143
• Rookie Scott Speed is making his NASCAR Sprint Cup Series debut this weekend. He is guaranteed entry into Sunday's field because his team is inside the top 35 in owner's points.
• Prior to Denny Hamlin's win in a Toyota in the spring, Chevrolet had won nine of the past 10 races here with Jimmie Johnson and Jeff Gordon winning four each. The Bowtie Brigade finished with five cars in the top seven in the most recent race here.
• In the past 10 races here, Gordon and Johnson have scored the most points of any active driver, with Johnson having a narrow lead over teammate Gordon (1,732-1,731). The duo also has the highest average finish of all active drivers, Johnson with a 6.0 in 13 starts and Gordon with 7.0 in 31 starts.
• A driver who tends to be overlooked at short tracks is Dale Earnhardt Jr. He has a career average short-track finish of 12.3, with a 14.2 average finish at Martinsville.
• Of the drivers guaranteed entry into Sunday's race, Robby Gordon has the worst average finish (33.8). The go-or-go-homer with 10 or more starts who has the worst average finish here is Derrike Cope (25.2). The go-or-go-homer with 10 or more starts who has the best average finish is Schrader (17.6).
• A dark horse for this weekend could be Jamie McMurray. In 11 starts here, he has seven top-10s and an average finish of 15.0. In the past five races, he has four top-10s and three top-5s with an eighth-place finish in the spring.
• A driver to possibly shy away from is Greg Biffle. In 11 starts here, he has only one top-10 and an average finish of 23.6, the worst of all the Chasers.
