Singh's hopes drown on back nine
By David Kraft

AUGUSTA, Ga. -- Vijay Singh was three shots behind Tiger Woods heading into Amen Corner on Sunday.

Five holes later, he didn't have a prayer of winning his second green jacket. Singh walked off the 15th green having dropped six shots in four holes after hitting three balls into the water. He was eight shots behind Woods and any thoughts of a second green jacket were drowned.

Vijay Singh had three birdies, three bogeys and the quadruple-bogey 9 on Sunday.
He shot a back-nine 41 and ended up seventh at 5-under 283.

"What do you want me to say?" Singh shrugged as he walked off the 18th hole.

After a birdie at the ninth and par at No. 10, Singh was Woods' closest pursuer as he reached the 11th tee. Singh opened Amen Corner by three-putting the 11th for bogey to fall to 9-under, four shots behind Woods. He made par at the 12th.

On the par-5 13th, he hit a perfect drive and had 216 yards to the hole. He hit a 4-iron that bounced into the bank just beyond the tributary of Rae's Creek that fronts the green, and trickled back in.

"I had a little mud on my ball, but I thought I hit a good shot," Singh said.

Singh saved par, however, by getting up-and-down from the drop area.

Possibly flustered, though, he hit a poor tee shot at the 14th hole and made bogey to fall to 8-under.

Then came the par-5 15th, by far the easiest hole this week at Augusta National. Singh eagled the 15th in the second round and had made bogey there just twice in 31 previous rounds.

Not Sunday.

"I hit three bad shots on 15, and that's the end of that," Singh said.

  • A hook off the tee left him without a shot at the green. He elected to lay up

  • A wedge into the pond fronting the 15th green.

  • Another lob wedge, this time from a tad farther back. It, too, trickled back into the water.

Singh finally got on the green in 7 and two-putted for a quadruple-bogey 9, the worst score on the hole all week.

He birdied the 16th and signed for a 76. Only three of the 45 players were worse Sunday.

"I'll come back here next year and try again," Singh said.
