The tournament began in 1946 as the Tournament of Champions, becoming the Houston Open in 1950, the Houston Classic in 1959, the Houston Champions International in 1966, the Houston Open in 1972, the Michelob Houston Open in 1980, the Houston Coca-Cola Open in 1983, the Houston Open in 1985, the Big I Houston Open in 1987, the Independent Insurance Agent Open in 1988 and the Shell Houston Open in 1992 (x-won in playoff; y-weather-shortened).
