SUTTON COLDFIELD, England -- Hole-by-hole scores for this afternoon's foursomes matches at the Ryder Cup:

FOURSOMES (USA 2½-EUR 1½) | FOURBALLS (EUR 3-USA 1)

Sutton/Verplank U.S. flag def. Clarke/Bjorn Europe flag 2 and 1

Scott Verplank
Verplank
Hal Sutton
Sutton
Match summary: More than a few eyebrows were raised when U.S. captain Curtis Strange put struggling Hal Sutton and rookie Scott Verplank out first in the foursomes trailing 3-1. But the move paid off -- the Americans were 2-down after 12 holes, but rallied with birdies at the 13th, 14th, 16th and a par at 17 to win 2 and 1. All square through 15, Verplank hit what may have been the most critical shot of the day for the Americans -- an approach on the 16th to within two feet. Sutton made the putt to give the Americans their first lead since the second hole. The U.S. won when Thomas Bjorn hit his team's third shot at the par-5 17th into a greenside bunker, then missed a 6-footer to send the match to the final hole. Bjorn and Darren Clarke bogeyed three of their final five holes. Sutton is now 5-1-1 in foursomes in his Ryder Cup career.

Garcia/Westwood Europe flag def. Woods/Calcavecchia U.S. flag 2 and 1

Lee Westwood
Westwood
Sergio Garcia
Garcia
Match summary: Uncharacteristically, Tiger Woods' putter let him down at some very inopportune times. All square through 10 holes, Woods missed a 4-foot putt for par on the 11th and an even shorter putt for par at the 12th to give Sergio Garcia and Lee Westwood a 2-up lead. On the 14th, Woods hit his approach into a greenside bunker, then couldn't convert a relatively short putt for par to fall 3-down. After picking up a shot when Garcia/Westwood bogeyed 15, Woods had a makable (for him) 16-footer for birdie, but watched it slide by. The Europeans then closed out the match a hole later when Mark Calcavecchia drove into a fairway bunker and Woods left his approach in a bunker 70 yards short of the green. The Americans did open a 1-up lead through five holes. The Europeans were 3-under for the 17 holes played. Woods is now 1-5 on the opening day of three Ryder Cups, 3-8-1 overall.

Mickelson/Toms U.S. flag vs. Montgomerie/Langer Europe flag, match halved

David Toms
Toms
Phil Mickelson
Mickelson
Match summary: Circle this match. The half-point the Americans stole might be worth something. The Americans were 3-down through 14 holes and had made just two birdies. The Europeans were counting on at least a 5-3 first-day lead. But Phil Mickelson and David Toms made three birdies in three holes to get even, then watched Bernhard Langer and Colin Montgomerie implode from the middle of the fairway on the 18th to halve the match. With the Americans scrambling to make bogey, Langer missed the green with his second shot, Montgomerie blew his chip 10 feet past the hole and Langer couldn't convert. Toms and Mickelson both had a hand in the American comeback -- Toms' brilliant third shot set up a birdie at 15, Mickelson chipped in for birdie at 16 and they combined to make birdie at 17. Langer/Montgomerie led 3-up at the turn.

Cink/Furyk U.S. flag def. Harrington/McGinley Europe flag, 3 and 2

Jim Furyk
Furyk
Stewart Cink
Cink
Match summary: Stewart Cink and Jim Furyk went on a blitz to start the back nine, picking up three shots in three holes to bury Padraig Harrington and Paul McGinley and earn the Americans a much-needed point. Furyk hit a couple of long putts during a blitz that saw the Americans birdie three of their first five holes after making the turn 1-up. Furyk won his first-ever team match in his sixth try; Cink was playing for the first time.
