Whistling Straits began with a 560-acre parcel of flat land. From that, architect Pete Dye sculpted a bit of Ireland and a touch of Scotland out of the Wisconsin coastline. Dye has said that building Whistling Straits was a "once in a lifetime thing."

Whistling Straits, which opened in 1998, offers two courses of dynamic contrast: The Straits and the Irish. Straits earned early acclaim both for its stunning layout that stretches along two miles of Lake Michigan shoreline, and for its traditional influences -- it is a walking course only and has caddies as well (required before twilight).

How good is the Straits Course? It's not only one of the few courses to earn five stars from Golf Digest's Best Places to Play, but will host this year's PGA Championship.
