Perry Maxwell, the same man who designed Southern Hills, also designed Prairie Dunes and redesigned Colonial. Jack Nicklaus won the Trans-Mississippi title here as an amateur. Prairie Dunes also hosted the 1995 U.S. Senior Amateur championship.

Called the "St. Andrews of the Prairies" because of its links layout, Prairie Dunes opened in 1937. Former USGA senior director David Eger won the 1988 U.S. Mid-Amateur championship here. Maxwell's son Press designed the back nine which opened in 1957.
