Downes leads Australia's British qualifying
MELBOURNE, Australia -- Australian golfer Chris Downes shot a 4-under-par 68 Tuesday at Kingston Heath to take the lead in the Australian leg of qualifying for the British Open.
Downes is one shot ahead of David Diaz and two ahead of Peter Fowler and Marcus Cain. Another 12 players in the field of 35 still have a chance of claiming one of the four spots available for the July 14-17 Open at St. Andrews.
The second and final round will be played Wednesday.
