Collins shoots 67 for two-shot Nationwide win
GLEN ALLEN, Va. -- Rookie Chad Collins won his first Nationwide Tour event Sunday, closing with a 5-under 67 for a two-stroke victory at the Henrico County Open.
Collins, who shared the lead after three rounds, birdied his first four holes and five of the opening six at The Dominion Club on the way to a 21-under 267, two shots better than Tom Scherrer (69).
"Getting off to a fast start couldn't have worked out any better," Collins said. "Making birdies on the first four holes was a nice bonus and gave me a cushion going into the tough holes. I didn't have any dreams it would start like that, but you always hope that it does."
The 26-year-old Collins won in his 16th Nationwide start and earned $80,000, moving from 40th to seventh on the money list with $113,935.
"I needed a breakthrough and luckily it was this week," said Collins, a four-time All-American at Division III Methodist College in Fayetteville, N.C.
Camilo Villegas, who shared the lead after three rounds, closed with a 71 and finished seventh.
