Liang shot a 1-over-par 73 while Steel had a 71 to finish regulation at 11-under 277 in the $1.1 million tournament, co-sanctioned by both tours.

Liang, who has won pro tournaments in China, parred the first playoff hole at Laguna National Golf and Country Club. Steel was on his way to a double bogey after landing in water when he teed off and did not finish.

"I just didn't execute my shot well off the tee," Steel said after the best result in his career.

Steel was leading by two strokes at the 16th after Liang's double bogey on the 15th. The two were tied after Liang birdied the 16th hole while Steel carded a bogey. Liang and Steel parred the final two holes to force the playoff.

England's Simon Dyson (71) was next at 278. He was followed at 279 by three Englishmen -- Nick Dougherty (71), David Lynn (69) and Anthony Wall (67) -- and Frenchman Jean Van de Velde (69).
