Mickelson to play in Tour's Travelers Championship
AUGUSTA, Ga. -- Masters defending champion Phil Mickelson announced Tuesday that he will play in the Travelers Championship in Connecticut in June.
Mickelson, the world's second-ranked player, has skipped the last three years of the PGA Tour's annual Connecticut stop because it did not fit into his schedule.
Mickelson, the only back-to-back winner in the 55-year history of the Connecticut tournament, told The Hartford Courant on Tuesday that he has wanted to return for the past several years.
It will be his sixth appearance in Connecticut.
Mickelson missed the cut in 1992, and tied for 26th in 1994. He returned in 2001 and won the first of two straight titles, then tied for 58th in 2003.
This year's tournament runs from June 21 to 24 at the Tournament Players Club at River Highlands in Cromwell, Conn.
"It fits into my schedule, I love the course and I'm very appreciative of all that Travelers is doing to make it a special event," Mickelson told the Courant on Tuesday at Augusta National, where he is the defending champion.
Mickelson won the Masters in 2004 and 2006, and the PGA Championship in 2005.
He is attempting this week to join Jack Nicklaus, Tom Watson and Tiger Woods as the only players to win majors in four consecutive years.
