Zions' 65 grabs first-round lead in Valle Romano Open
MARBELLA, Spain -- Australia's Matthew Zions shot a 6-under 65 on Thursday to take a one-stroke lead after the first round of the Valle Romano Open of Andalucia.
The 28-year-old Zions, based in Denver, had eight birdies and a bogey on the Aloha Golf Club course.
"I putted well, something I hadn't done recently," Zions said.
Spain's Alejandro Canizares opened with a 66.
Spain's Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano, coming off a playoff victory Sunday in the rain-shortened Italian Open, was another stroke back at 67 along with England's Chris Gane and Gary Lockerbie, Sweden's Joakim Haeggman and South Africa's Louis Oosterhuizen.
Fernandez-Castano is teaming with fellow Spanish star Miguel Angel Jimenez to promote the first-year event. Jimenez shot a 72.
