SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- For the second time this year, Phil Mickelson will skip the final tournament before a major championship, only this time it's not by choice.

After getting a second opinion about his wrist injury Monday in San Diego, Mickelson has decided against playing in the PGA Tour's Stanford St. Jude Championship this week in Memphis and will get a cortisone shot to relieve the pain in his left wrist. The specialist assured Mickelson he will be able to compete pain-free in next week's U.S. Open.

"The timing isn't the best because I really wanted to play at Memphis," said Mickelson, who didn't play the Houston Open before the Masters in April. "But the good news is there is no break or fracture. I have inflammation that can be relieved and I'm looking forward to playing the Open at 100 percent physically."

Mickelson withdrew after 11 holes of the Memorial Tournament last week due to soreness in his wrist. He had one examination on Friday in San Diego, then underwent therapy for three days and was hopeful of playing at full strength in Memphis. After yesterday's prognosis, however, Mickelson decided to have the injection.

A three-time major champion, Mickelson owns victories this season at the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am and the Players Championship.
