Adamonis edges van der Walt on eighth extra hole for Nationwide win
MIDLAND, Texas -- Brad Adamonis outlasted Tjaart van der Walt in a playoff that matched the second-longest overtime session in Nationwide Tour history, parring all eight extra holes Sunday to win the WNB Golf Classic for his first tour title.
Adamonis won with a 4-foot putt after van der Walt missed a 5-footer.
"I don't care. Any way I can get a win is great,'' Adamonis said. "I just kept on grinding. That's kind of the way I've always played my game. I just hung in there and finally I got a break in my career. ... It's tremendous for me to get a win because I won't be as nervous, and I can play some better golf.''
Adamonis bogeyed the final hole of regulation for a 2-under 70 that left him tied with van der Walt (68), Vance Veazey (68) and Ron Whittaker (71) at 10-under 278 on the Midland Country Club course. Whittaker bogeyed the first extra hole to drop out, and Veazey was eliminated with a bogey on the second playoff hole.
Adamonis earned $85,000 to jump from 69th to 30th on the money list with $161,735. The top 25 after the final three events of the season will earn 2008 PGA Tour cards.
The eight-hole playoff was the fourth in Nationwide Tour history and first since Ben Bates beat Paul Gow in the 2004 Reese's Cup Open.
In the longest playoff, Eric Booker beat Notah Begay III on the ninth extra hole in the 1998 Lehigh Valley Open.
