Nicklaus had captained the team for the past three outings against the international squad. The Americans tied in South Africa in 2003, then won in Virginia in 2005 and in Montreal in 2007. Nicklaus also led the 1998 team that fell short in Melbourne, Australia.

The 2009 event will be held at Harding Park Golf Course in San Francisco. The Americans, who lead the overall series 5-1-1, will put a two-match winning streak on the line.

Couples played on the American Presidents Cup teams in 1994, 1996, 1998 and 2005. He has a 9-5-2 overall record, with a 3-0-1 mark in singles play.

An official announcement is expected Tuesday.
