NEW DELHI, India -- Organizers have doubled the prize fund at the Indian Open, making it a million-dollar tournament for the first time in its 45-year history.

"This will be an exceptional year for the tournament as prize money has been increased to $1 million," Indian Golf Union president TT Jagannathan said Thursday.

Asian Tour executive chairman Kyi Hla Han said the increase was a reflection of the growth of professional golf across the continent.

"The Asian Tour's 2008 season is poised for a record year with our schedule offering an all-time high of 29 tournaments and over $38 million in prize money," he said.

The Indian Open will be held at the Delhi Golf Club from Oct. 9-12.

Last year, local favorite Jyoti Randhawa became only the second player after Australian Peter Thomson to win the Indian Open three times.
