Goldberg leads by one stroke after first round at Public Links
AURORA, Colo. -- Aaron Goldberg shot 6-under 65 and took the first round lead in the two-round stroke play qualifying of the 83rd U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship on Monday.
"I hit a lot of fairways and greens and made putts," said Goldberg, who recently completed his eligibility at San Diego State University. "I think I only had 28 putts."
The San Diego native held a one shot lead over Zachary Zaremba of Pueblo and Travis Reid of Clovis, N.M.
Goldberg had a 34 on his first nine, then put together a string of five birdies on the initial seven holes of his last nine.
He briefly dropped back into a tie with a bogey on his second to last hole. He regrouped to finish with a 3-foot birdie putt on No. 9, his last hole, to take the lead.
The 156-member field will be reduced to the lowest 64 players after Tuesday's round, who will advance to match play on Wednesday.
Zaremba birdied No. 11 and 18 to start his day. "My 12-foot putt for birdie on 11 was probably my best putt," he said.
He followed it up with birdies on Nos. 1, 3, 6 and 9. The only blemish on his card came when he found the water hazard on No. 14 and bogeyed the hole.
Reid, who transferred to New Mexico State from New Mexico, appeared headed for the lead with birdies on Nos. 7 and 8, only to find trouble in a fairway bunker on No. 9, finishing with a bogey on his final hole.
"It left a sour taste in my mouth," Reid said. "I probably could have shot a 63 today."
Rickie Fowler and Corey Nagy were two strokes off the lead back at 67. Fowler's round included an eagle when he holed a 7-iron from 123 yards off the green on the Par-4, No. 14 hole.
"I tried to land it just short of the hole," Fowler said. "I didn't see it go in, but I heard it one hopped and went in."
