Boom or bust in Vegas could make or break many players' years
Predictions are always a gamble. So this week's host -- TPC Summerlin in Las Vegas -- seems like a particularly appropriate venue to make a few picks for the Justin Timberlake Shriners Hospital Open.
And speaking of the tournament host, music star and Grammy award-winner Timberlake has rolled out the red carpet for his first official foray into the PGA Tour.
So who will take advantage of Sin City this week? Our experts break down their predictions into four categories.Want a different viewpoint on who might win? Try the ESPN.com FOREcaster.

| Horse for the Course |
Mike Weir. One of the highest-ranked players in the field, Weir tied for 10th at the Las Vegas tournament a year ago.
Returning to the scene of his nearly unparalleled success as an amateur, former UNLV golfer Ryan Moore should feel right at home once again.
Only one player in the field has won more money in 2008 than Mike Weir, who was T-10 a year ago in Las Vegas.
George McNeill. He won here last year by four strokes, shooting all four rounds in 67 or lower.
| Birdie Buster |
Bo Van Pelt. Still searching for his first victory, Van Pelt seems to love Vegas; he is a combined 45 under par the past three years, with a tie for fifth last year.
In his first Fall Finish event of the year, Hunter Mahan -- one of the U.S. Ryder Cup heroes -- should be amongst the favorites to earn this trophy.
Mark Wilson is a fashion-able pick, consider- ing his T-3 in Texas last week and his T-10 at Las Vegas in 2007. |
John Daly. He may bust up a casino or two, as well.
| Super Sleeper |
Paul Azinger. Making his first start since his winning effort as captain of the U.S. Ryder Cup team, it is also just his second tournament since May. Azinger did make the cut at the PGA Championship and won this tournament 21 years ago.
No, the local airport isn't named after him -- it's not even spelled the same way -- but Scott McCarron could fly up the leaderboard this week.
Past recent champs -- Andre Stolz, Wes Short, George McNeill -- make picking the sleeper a, ahem, crapshoot. Big names need not apply. So how about Chris Stroud? He was T-6 a year ago and T-6 last week.
Davis Love III. He won here in 1993 and was second in 1996 when the event was 90 holes over three courses.
| Winner |
Hunter Mahan. The Ryder Cup star is making his first appear-ance since the Tour Championship -- and tries to get his first win of the year. |
After moving from No. 134 to No. 120 on the money list with a fifth-place finish in Texas, Jeff Overton could become the fifth straight winner to hit the jackpot in Vegas for his first career title.
Last week, Rory Sabbatini had his first top-10 since January, and he had three straight top-10s in Vegas from 2001-03.
Daniel Chopra. He was second by a stroke here in 2006 and now looks for his second win of the year.
