Karlsson hopes to return this month
CRANS-SUR-SIERRE, Switzerland -- Robert Karlsson will not defend his Mercedes Masters title in Germany next week because he needs more time to recover from a lingering eye infection, his manager said on Friday.
But last year's European No. 1 will return to full practice next week and hopes to make a comeback later this month.
The Swede's manager, Lillian Jansson, told Reuters: "Robert's in-depth sight is still poor. He'll see the doctor next Monday, but he plans to practice full-time from next Tuesday and then expects to be back in action at the Vivendi [Seve] Trophy."
Karlsson has been out of action with a retinal infection since late May, missing three majors and this week's start of Europe's year-long Ryder Cup campaign.
Ryder Cup captain Colin Montgomerie is anxious for Karlsson to begin playing for the team again.
Another of Montgomerie's potential team members, current European money-list leader Martin Kaymer of Germany, is also out of action after breaking toes in a karting accident in America two weeks ago.
His injury was expected to keep him away from competition for six weeks but Jansson, who is also Kaymer's manager, said he was recovering quickly and could be back earlier.
