KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. -- Walker Cup player Nathan Smith and Mike McCoy shared medallist honors Sunday in the U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship at The Kiawah Island Club, finishing two rounds of stroke-play qualifying at 3-under 140.
The 31-year-old Smith, from Pittsburgh, shot a 4-under 68 at Cassique, and the 46-year-old McCoy, from West Des Moines, Iowa, had a 1-over 70 on The River Course.
"That's an honor," Smith said. "There are so many good players. It's an accomplishment. Medalist or co-medalist or, whatever, that's an honor."
Robert Gerwin of Cincinnati and Derek Berg of Duvall, Wash., tied for third, a stroke back. Gerwin had a 70 on The River Course, and Berg shot a 73 at Cassique.
The top 64 qualified for match play in the tournament for players 25 and older.
