"Everyone, it's a sad day for my family!! My Dad has passed,'' Watson wrote. He later added: "My dad got to see me win & play for USA in the Ryder Cup!!!! Gods plan is always right! Golf gave my family my best year & worst year!!''

Watson won his first PGA Tour event in June at the Travelers Championship, prevailing in a playoff over Scott Verplank and Corey Pavin. He broke down after winning and later told reporters he was thinking about his father.

Watson lost in a playoff at the PGA Championship to Martin Kaymer, but secured a spot on Pavin's U.S. Ryder Cup team in the process.

The Ryder Cup in Wales was especially emotional for Watson, who spoke of a team dinner where Pavin invited Maj. Dan Rooney, a decorated F-16 pilot (and a PGA golf professional) to talk to the team.

"My dad was a military man,'' Watson said in Wales. "He was in Vietnam. He (Rooney) gave us a special present last night. It meant a lot. My dad is dying of cancer; the doctor says three months to live. I'm playing this for him.''

Watson won his first match but lost his last three in the 14½ to 13½ European victory.

This year on the PGA Tour, he had four top-10 finishes and earned more than $3.1 million.
