Report: Davis Love III to captain U.S.

Davis Love III, widely considered the front-runner to captain the 2012 United States Ryder Cup team, has been approved as the captain by the PGA of America's board of directors, according to a report on GolfChannel.com.

The website said the PGA plans to make the announcement "in the first quarter sometime next year," according to Julius Mason, the senior director of communications and media relations for the PGA of America.

Love, an assistant captain for the 2010 American team which lost to Europe, has played in six Ryder Cups as a player. He has said often that he'd like to be a Ryder Cup captain.

His opposing captain may be Jose Maria Olazabal. The Spaniard, according to the BBC and other media outlets, is expected to be named Europe's captain on Jan. 18, when the European Tour makes its selection known.
