Woods among nominees for 2002 World Sports Award

NEW YORK -- Tiger Woods, three-time Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong and the two-time defending NBA champion Los Angeles Lakers top the list of U.S. nominees for the 2002 Laureus World Sports Awards.

Woods had five victories in 2001, including a win at The Masters to give him possession of all four major championships at the same time. He was PGA Tour player of the year after winning the money and scoring titles.

Armstrong, Woods and Olympic sprinter Maurice Greene are nominees for the Laureus World Sportsmen of the Year. The Lakers are in contention for team of the year.

Venus Williams, Jennifer Capriati and pole vaulter Stacy Dragila were nominated for the Laureus World Sportswoman of the Year.

Winners will be announced May 14 in Monaco.
