Collegian shoots 7-under 64 in first round of stroke play
GALLOWAY TOWNSHIP, N.J. -- Jeff Overton of Evansville, Ind., shot a record-tying, 7-under 64 Monday to lead after the first round at the U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship.
The Indiana University junior finished with three straight birdies to equal the mark for lowest stroke-play score in the U.S. Golf Association event's 77 years. Robert Gamez (1989) and Albert Ochoa (1997) share the record.
Chris Wheeler of Pilot Point, Texas, was two strokes back.
Matt Johnson of Fairfax, Va., and Jason Baitaille of South Plainfield, N.J., were tied for third after 68s.
