Overton overcomes early deficit

7/17/2003

GALLOWAY TOWNSHIP, N.J. -- Qualifying medallist Jeff Overton
advanced to the second round of the U.S. Amateur Public Links on
Wednesday, beating Marc Hocking 2 and 1.

Overton, a junior at Indiana University, overcame an early
two-hole deficit after matching the 36-hole qualifying record for
any U.S. Golf Association event at 10-under 132.

"I just tried to shake it all off," Overton said. "It's
exciting to shoot 64 and 68. That's awesome, but there is really
nothing to get nervous about. I just try to have fun and enjoy the
experience. I'm just trying to soak it all in."

Defending champion Ryan Moore of UNLV also won his opening match
at Blue Heron Pines, rallying to beat Zack King 3 and 2.

"If I wasn't as experienced as I am, being three down through
six holes, I could have started putting pressure on myself and
started worrying," Moore said. "But, I said it was match play and
it can turn around like that."

The 36-hole final is Saturday in the tournament limited to
amateurs who do not have playing privileges on a private course.
