WILSON, N.C. -- Local North Carolina school officials say a high school basketball player has died after collapsing following a water break during practice.

Wilson County schools spokesman Bob Kendall said 14-year-old Anthony Dontra Eatmon died Monday afternoon at Hunt High School in Wilson, about 40 miles east of Raleigh.

A 6-foot-2, 300-pound freshman, Eatmon was a member of the school's junior varsity football and basketball teams, and the chorus.

The team had completed warmup drills and was taking a break when Eatmon collapsed. He was pronounced dead at a hospital.

Kendall said Eatmon's last physical was in May as required and it showed no problems. No cause of death has been immediately determined.

The school had a moment of silence when classes resumed Tuesday. Kendall said there was no word yet on funeral or memorial services.

According to Frederick Mueller of the National Center for Catastrophic Injury in Chapel Hill, statistics show Eatmon was the state's fifth high school athlete to die in the 2008-09 academic year.

Mueller said he doesn't recall a year with that many deaths. He said there have been three deaths of football players and one other in basketball.

He said deaths that occur in basketball usually are heart-related.
