Barnes leads Ames to state title

Harrison Barnes from Ames (Iowa) High, a 6-foot-6 junior forward, has been selected as this week's ESPN RISE National Boys Basketball Player of the Week.

Harrison Barnes led his Ames (Iowa) squad to a state championship.

Barnes saved his best for the final week of the season and led his school to a historic state title. Ames, which became Iowa's first Class 4A team to finish unbeaten since 2006, won its first state title in 18 years and seventh overall during a 55-45 win over Linn-Mar (Marion) before 12,000 at the Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.

In that title game, Barnes, an ESPNU Super 60-ranked player, had 24 points, including six dunks on 9 of 17 shooting, and eight rebounds as the Little Cyclones (26-0) pulled away in the fourth quarter. He also scored 23 points (making 7 of 12 shots and 7 of 8 free throws) against Johnston in the semifinals and despite foul trouble dropped 11 points in the quarterfinals against Iowa City West.

Barnes is considering schools such as Iowa State, Iowa, Duke and Kansas.

East Region Region Boys' Basketball Player of the Week

Durand Scott (Rice, New York, N.Y.)
In a battle between teams both among the top 12 in the ESPN RISE FAB 50, Scott stole the show by making 10 of 15 shots from the floor and scoring 27 points to lead the Raiders past Christ the King (Middle Village, N.y), 67-58, for the New York Catholic High School Athletic Association Class AA intersectional crown. Scott, who is headed to Miami, helped Rice move up to No. 7 in this week's FAB 50.

Southeast Region Boys' Basketball Player of the Week

Ari Stewart (Wheeler, Marietta, Ga.)
In Wheeler's fourth state title game triumph since 2000, this one 73-53 over Milton in the AAAAA final, Stewart led the way with 21 points and 14 rebounds. The Wake Forest signee and 6-foot-7 forward also had 25 points in an earlier state playoff game.

Midwest Region Boys' Basketball Player of the Week

Harrson Barnes (Ames, Iowa) Also named the ESPN RISE National Boys Basketball Player of the Week.

Southwest Region Boys' Basketball Player of the Week

Joseph Young (Yates, Houston) He connected on seven 3-pointers and finished with 29 points as Yates won the Class 4A state title with a 94-78 triumph over Kimball (Dallas). Young, a junior who is the son of former University of Houston star Michael Young, was the game MVP.

West Region Boys' Basketball Player of the Week

Terrence Jones (Jefferson, Portland, Ore.)
The highly-touted 6-9 junior center racked up 27 points and hauled in 18 rebounds as the Democrats claimed their second straight Class 5A state title with a 60-44 win over Century. Jones, who had 39 points in an earlier state playoff win oveer Madras, is receiving scholarship offers from numerous Pac-10 colleges.
