Trinity (Ky.) makes big jump into top 25

Updated: August 6, 2008

ESPN will release the ESPN RISE FAB 50 national football rankings to start each week of the regular season and playoffs.

Another Trinity is coming up fast. Trinity of Louisville, Kentucky, took down previous No. 18 St. Xavier of Cincinnati 17-6 and moved from unranked up to No. 22 in this week's FAB 50. The Shamrocks have their annual showdown coming up in two weeks against archrival St. Xavier of Louisville, which this week is No. 14 in the nation.

ESPN RISE FAB 50

The ESPN RISE FAB 50 rankings were compiled by a panel of ESPN RISE and ESPN.com high school editors, which includes Mark Tennis, Doug Huff, Chris Lawlor, Jon Mahoney, Sheldon Shealer, Ronnie Flores and Paul Muyskens.

1. Trinity (Euless, Texas)
Record:
3-0
Points: 250, five first-place votes
Previous rank: 1

The Trojans showed the mettle expected of a top-ranked team in their 24-14 dispatching of regionally ranked Allen, even though Nebraska-bound RB Dontrayevous Robinson was out with an injury. Sophomore Tevin Williams (5-foot-11, 175 pounds) stepped up in place of Robinson, rushing 30 times for 179 yards and two scores to key the win. Williams' 5-yard run opened the scoring in the first quarter, and his 2-yard TD run on a key fourth down put the Trojans up 17-7 heading into the half. The Trinity defense did the rest from there, slowing down Allen's high-flying attack and intercepting standout junior quarterback Matt Brown twice. Keller (3-0) will play the nation's No. 1 on Friday.

2. Lowndes (Valdosta, Ga.)
Record:
4-0
Points: 245
Previous rank: 2

The Vikings pounded MTV star Rush Propst and his Colquitt County Packers 51-0. Lowndes rushed for more than 300 yards and six touchdowns. Senior running back Greg Reid returned a punt 47 yards for a score and ran for 72 more. Propst is the former head coach from Hoover, Ala. Next up for the Vikings is a conference tilt against Tift County.

3. St. Thomas Aquinas (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.)
Record:
2-0
Points: 240
Previous rank: 4

The stock is up for head coach George Smith's team, even though the Raiders have had two consecutive bye weeks. That's because Elder of Cincinnati won a big game in Ohio, 52-31, over previously unbeaten St. Edward of Lakewood, Ohio. Elder improved to 4-1 and is the same team St. Thomas Aquinas defeated at the Kirk Herbstreit Classic. The Raiders return to the gridiron Friday against South Plantation.

4. Gateway (Monroeville, Pa.)
Record:
4-0
Points: 235
Previous rank: 4

Year after year, the Gators churn out top recruits. This season, it's the Ohio State-bound duo of Dorian Bell (linebacker/running back) and Corey Brown (cornerback/wide receiver). Next in line might be junior quarterback Robert Kalkstein, who's been impressive running Gateway's explosive offensive attack this season. In a 44-8 win over Penn-Trafford, Kalkstein completed 13 of 19 passes for 193 yards and three touchdowns, including two to Brown. The Gators will play at Norwin on Friday.

5. Byrnes (Duncan, S.C.)
Record:
4-0
Points: 227
Previous rank: 6

Byrnes routed Lincoln of Tallahassee, Fla., 38-0, and the Rebels extended their winning streak to 19 games. Quarterback Chas Dodd threw for 330 yards and three touchdowns, and receiver Jazz King had six catches for 127 yards in the win. Byrnes will play Gaffney on Friday.

6. De La Salle (Concord, Calif.)
Record:
2-0
Points: 225
Previous rank: 5

After their come-from-behind 27-21 road victory over Loyola of Los Angeles, the Spartans drop one spot because they continue to have trouble on defense. They weren't able to stop Cubs running back Anthony Barr, but for the second consecutive week, a key special-teams play was used as a springboard to victory. Noah Perio returned a partially blocked field-goal attempt from his own goal line to the Loyola 25-yard line. Two plays later, QB Blake Wayne scored the winning touchdown. De La Salle has a few difference-makers, but its size and overall talent level might be a notch below what it had last season. It also didn't look good when the Serra of San Mateo team they beat by one point lost to McQueen of Reno, Nev. On Saturday on ESPNU, De La Salle will look for its first convincing victory of the season against FAB 50 No. 28 Don Bosco Prep of New Jersey.

7. Poly (Long Beach, Calif.)
Record:
2-0
Points: 217*
Previous rank: 7

Facing a Newport Harbor of Newport Beach team that had won its previous game 58-7 proved to be no problem for the Jackrabbits. They rolled to a 26-2 win and would have gotten the shutout were it not for high snap on a punt that sailed into the end zone. Offensively, Melvin Richardson racked up 165 yards on 14 carries and scored twice, while Daveon Barner had 19 carries for 86 yards and another score. Poly next plays at home against Carson, which is the same team that lost in triple overtime on Sept. 3 on ESPNU against Mater Dei of Santa Ana.

8. Armwood (Seffner, Fla.)
Record:
3-0
Points: 217*
Previous rank: 8

The Hawks got defensive in a 41-0 blowout against Brandon. Armwood limited Brandon to 26 yards of offense and one first down. Senior QB Mywan Jackson accounted for five touchdowns, two through the air and three on the ground. Armwood will battle Newsome of Lithia in its next game.

9. Oscar Smith (Chesapeake, Va.)
Record:
4-0
Points: 211
Previous rank: 9

Oscar Smith made no doubt about the outcome of its meeting with Great Bridge, scoring touchdowns on five of its six first-half possessions en route to a 43-0 halftime lead in a 50-14 victory. Phillip Sims threw three touchdown passes, and Tim Smith was on the receiving end of two.

10. Deerfield Beach (Deerfield Beach, Fla.)
Record:
3-0
Points: 201
Previous rank: 10

The Bucks blanked Dillard of Fort Lauderdale 14-0 at Lockhart Stadium. The game ball went to junior RB Cassius McDowell, who rushed for 158 yards and two touchdowns. Highly regarded Dillard senior RB Trabis Ward gashed the Bucks for 170 yards in the loss. Deerfield Beach is off this week.

11. Colerain (Cincinnati, Ohio)
Record:
5-0
Points: 198
Previous rank: 13

The Cardinals, ranked No. 1 in the state Division I media poll, continue to extend impressive win streaks after beating Sycamore 35-14. It was the 60th straight Greater Miami Conference win, the 45th consecutive home victory and the 34th straight regular-season win dating back to 2005. Colerain didn't attempt a pass while outrushing the Aviators, 348-185. Three backs gained more than 100 yards -- fullback Traylon Durham carried 22 times for 144 yards and a TD, junior quarterback Greg Tabar rushed 17 times for 103 yards and a score, and Tyler Williams ran 11 times for 102 yards and a 66-yard TD. Colerain will tackle Mason Friday.

12. Glenville (Cleveland, Ohio)
Record:
5-0
Points: 197
Previous rank: 12

The Tarblooders, ranked No. 2 in the Ohio Division I media poll behind Colerain, recorded their third straight shutout with a 40-0 blanking of Lincoln-West in a Senate League contest. It was the 74th straight league win for Glenville, which has dominated league play the past decade. The Tarblooders jumped out to a 19-0 cushion after a quarter and rested many of the starters. Senior quarterback Terrence Owens completed 5 of 8 passes for 72 yards and one touchdown against the winless foe. Glenville tackles city rival John Adams on Friday.

13. Lake Travis (Austin, Texas)
Record:
4-0
Points: 193
Previous rank: 11

Friday night's showdown with Louisiana traditional power Evangel Christian was over quickly, as the Cavs' offense ran full throttle on the way to a 46-31 win. After falling behind 12-8 early on, Lake Travis' attack caught fire behind Texas-bound Elite 11 QB Garrett Gilbert, who led four straight scoring drives, resulting in a 39-12 halftime lead for the Cavs. Gilbert passed for an amazing 311 yards and four scores in the first half and finished 25-of-43 for 406 yards and five touchdowns on the night. Of some concern to the Lake Travis staff might be the defense, which surrendered nearly 500 yards of total offense to Evangel. The Louisiana school had been bombed the previous week by another Texas school, Longview. The Cavs open district play this week, hosting Killeen.

14. St. Xavier (Louisville, Ky.)
Record:
3-0
Points: 186
Previous rank: 14

The Tigers' game against city rival Male last weekend was among local games that were called off because of power outages resulting from high windstorms. St. X's next game is against DuPont Manual on Friday. The Oct. 3 contest vs. rival Trinity at Papa John Stadium at the University of Louisville annually attracts crowds of about 30,000 fans. So far this season, both teams are not only unbeaten but also ranked in the top 25 of the ESPN RISE FAB 50.

15. Camden County (Kingsland, Ga.)
Record:
3-0
Points: 180
Previous rank: 15

Camden County enjoyed a bye week. The Wildcats, who are coming off of an impressive 44-16 win over Hoover of Alabama, return to action Friday against Windsor Forest of Savannah.

16. Lakeland (Lakeland, Fla.)
Record:
3-0
Points: 177
Previous rank: 16

The 5A power Dreadnaughts toppled Winter Haven 36-13. Lakeland led 10-7 at halftime but dominated the second half, outscoring Winter Haven, 26-6. Lakeland next welcomes Boyd Anderson of Fort Lauderdale for homecoming weekend.

17. Plano (Plano, Texas)
Record:
4-0
Points: 166
Previous rank: 17

Plano notched its reported 700th win in school history, topping Temple 49-29 Friday night in a matchup of traditional powers and standout running backs. The game between the two schools, which have won a combined nine state titles, featured a showdown between Plano's dynamic senior Rex Burkhead and Temple junior sensation Lache Seastrunk. Seastrunk had his moments, including an 84-yard scoring run, but it was Burkhead's night. The 5-11, 190-pounder scored three first-quarter touchdowns and six on the night and accounting for more than 300 all-purpose yards. Burkhead opened the scoring with a 30-yard TD reception from Carson Meger, then scored on runs of 7, 3, 7 and 5 yards. He even returned a punt 49 yards for a touchdown for good measure. He finished with 213 yards on 21 carries and also had 51 yards receiving. The Wildcats are at 0-4 Plano East to kick off district play Friday.

18. South Panola (Batesville, Miss.)
Record:
4-0
Points: 165
Previous rank: 20
Watch Highlights

The Tigers made a statement for Mississippi football last weekend with a 28-18 win over unbeaten Apopka, Fla., in a game televised on ESPNU. It extended the nation's longest active win streak to 79 games as an estimated 8,500 fans looked on in Batesville, Miss. Junior running back Nicholas Parker rushed 25 times for 242 yards and all four Tigers touchdowns on runs of 59, 59, 1 and 71 yards. South Panola, which has won the past five state Class 5A titles, will host Horn Lake before facing possibly its toughest in-state regular-season test on Oct. 3 at Olive Branch.

19. Carmel (Carmel, Ind.)
Record:
5-0
Points: 163
Previous rank: 19

The defending Indiana Class 5A champion Greyhounds led by only 10-3 at halftime before pulling away from Lawrence North to finish the game 27-6. Senior running back Kurt Freytag rushed 17 times for 158 yards and two touchdowns, both in the second half. Quarterback Morgan Newton completed 15 of 20 passes for 144 yards and scored on a 9-yard run. Carmel will host North Central on Friday.

20. Skyline (Sammamish, Wash.)
Record:
3-0
Points: 154
Previous rank: 21

Gino Simone returned the opening kickoff 93 yards for a touchdown, and the game became a 56-0 rout of Lake Washington. Simone also added a touchdown reception from QB Jake Heaps, who finished 9-of-15 for 133 yards. The Spartans' defense also looked strong by forcing six turnovers and blocking two punts in the shutout. The next game is against Newport on Friday.

21. Southlake Carroll (Southlake, Texas)
Record:
3-0
Points: 150
Previous rank: 22

SMU recruit Kyle Padron passed for 244 yards and three touchdowns, and Southlake Carroll's defense took over in the second half for a convincing 35-10 win over Mesquite. Padron, who also ran for 98 yards, scored from 1 yard out to give the Dragons a 14-10 halftime lead. He later passed for two third-quarter touchdowns to help put the game away. Meanwhile, the Dragons' defense, led by Missouri recruit Brayden Burnett and standout junior Jackson Richards up front, registered five sacks, forced three turnovers and held Mesquite to less than 300 yards of total offense. Carroll's scheduled game against Galena Park North Shore has been cancelled following the devastation caused by Hurricane Ike.

22. Trinity (Louisville, Ky.)
Record:
3-0
Points: 139*
Previous rank: NR

The Shamrocks' defense never rested in a key 17-6 victory over visiting St. Xavier of Cincinnati. The win over the FAB 50-ranked and defending Ohio Division I champion Bombers vaulted Trinity into the top 25 of the FAB 50 rankings. In front of some 12,500 fans at Papa John Stadium at the University of Louisville, the Trinity defense recorded seven sacks, intercepted two passes and forced one fumble. The defending state Class 6A champion Shamrocks, which have won seven titles in the past eight years, will face city rival Eastern this week before the anticipated city showdown versus FAB 50-ranked St. Xavier on Oct. 3.

23. Centennial (Corona, Calif.)
Record:
2-0
Points: 139*
Previous rank: 33

Last year's Centennial team lost its only game to Mater Dei of Santa Ana, so Friday's 47-35 win at home over the FAB 50-ranked Monarchs was particularly sweet. Arthur Burns led the ground game with 29 carries for 234 yards and three TDs while quarterback Taylor Martinez also scored twice. Ricky Marvray scored on a 96-yard kickoff return. On Friday, the Huskies hit the road to face Clovis West of Fresno.

24. Maryville (Maryville, Tenn.)
Record:
5-0
Points: 136
Previous rank: 24

The winning streak for Maryville is now 65, and the team hasn't lost in regional play since 2000. Quarterback Philip Juhlin passed for 115 yards and rushed for 97 as he led Maryville to a 45-6 victory over Powell. Maryville will host an 0-4 William Blount team Friday.

25. St. Ignatius (Cleveland)
Record:
4-1
Points: 122
Previous rank: 27

The Wildcats vaulted to a 35-7 halftime cushion en route to a 49-14 victory over visiting St. Francis of Athol Springs, N.Y. Quarterback Andrew Holland passed for three touchdowns of 49, 27 and 17 yards, all in the first half. It was the fourth straight win for the Wildcats, who dropped a 20-17 debut decision to unbeaten FAB 50-ranked Glenville. St. Ignatius visits Massillon Washington on Friday.

26. Arrowhead (Hartland, Wis.)
Record:
4-0
Points: 121
Previous rank: 26

The defending state Division I champion Warhawks recorded their third straight shutout in a 14-0 victory over Waukesha West. Arrowhead has outscored its past three foes 114-0. Junior quarterback Tom Parish led the offense against West by completing nine of 13 passes for 156 yards, including a 58-yard connection to set up a first-quarter touchdown. Parish also rushed 13 times for 71 yards. Arrowhead tackles Kettle Moraine on Friday.

27. Phoebus (Hampton, Va.)
Record:
5-0
Points: 120
Previous rank: 28

The offensively charged Phoebus Phantoms found yet another weapon last week, as Chaz Robinson emerged with a pair of touchdowns in the team's 48-0 rout of Warwick. The Phantoms have scored at least 44 points in every game this season while their defense has allowed only one touchdown all year. The series of routs have relegated Phoebus starters to spectators for the second half of almost every game this season. Phoebus was up 28-0 at halftime against Warwick, piled on 20 third-quarter points and rested the team's top players.

28. Don Bosco Prep (Ramsey, N.J.)
Record:
1-1
Points: 109
Previous rank: 23

The good news is that Bosco got in the win column after toppling Valley Forge Military Academy of Wayne, Pa., 51-0. The Ironmen held Valley Forge to 12 total yards, including minus-30 on the ground. Senior running back Dillon Romain ran for 129 yards on 19 carries, but according to The Record of Hackensack, N.J., junior running back Tony Jones could miss up to six weeks with a broken collarbone. That leads us to the bad news. Without Jones, Bosco will be without its most explosive offensive threat when it travels to play No. 6 De La Salle of Concord, Calif., in a game that will be nationally televised on ESPNU on Saturday at 10:30 p.m. ET.

29. Bellarmine (San Jose, Calif.)
Record:
2-0
Points: 108
Previous rank: 30

Based on observations of those who have seen both teams play, the Bells currently look better than No. 6 De La Salle and could be poised to move up to No. 1 in Northern California if the Spartans lose to No. 28 Don Bosco Prep on Saturday night. Bellarmine defeated St. Mary's of Stockton, 35-8, on Thursday as running back Usua Amanam rushed for 119 yards and one touchdown and also picked off two passes playing safety. This week, the Bells shouldn't have much trouble in the nonleague game against Piedmont Hills of San Jose.

30. Quince Orchard (Gaithersburg, Md.)
Record:
3-0
Points: 104
Previous rank: 29

Two of Maryland's longest win streaks were on the line last week when Quince Orchard took on Damascus in a battle of defending state champions. Travis Hawkins scored on a pair of pass receptions, including a 50-yard screen, as QO built a 14-3 halftime lead en route to a 35-3 victory. The result extended QO's win streak to 17 while ending Damascus' at 13. Damascus had three chances inside the Quince Orchard red zone in the first half, yet came away with only three points. Hawkins, who has been nursing an injury, was used sparingly as the Cougars pulled away for the victory.

31. North Shore (Houston)
Record:
2-0
Points: 100
Previous rank: 31

The Mustangs were out of action for a second straight week after Hurricane Ike. Power is still out in the area, but North Shore hopes to reopen for classes this week. However, Saturday's scheduled game at Southlake Carroll has been cancelled due to the devastation caused by Hurrican Ike.

32. Bastrop (Bastrop, La.)
Record:
2-0
Points: 99
Previous rank: 32

The Bastrop-Richwood contest turned into the Rueben Randle show. The highly recruited athlete threw three touchdown passes, rushed for a score and returned a punt for a touchdown in the team's 40-12 victory. Bastrop should receive a challenge Friday when it faces East St. John.

33. St. Xavier (Cincinnati)
Record:
3-2
Points: 92
Previous rank: 18

The Bombers lost a 17-6 road decision to unbeaten Trinity at Louisville, Ky., but worse was that junior quarterback Luke Massa suffered a broken collarbone in the game and is expected to miss four to six weeks. The Bombers are the only team in the FAB 50 with two losses, but their challenging schedule merits those losses. St. X has lost to a pair of unbeaten FAB 50-ranked teams in Trinity and city rival Colerain, but has handed two FAB 50-ranked teams their only losses -- Prattville, Ala., and Don Bosco Prep of New Jersey. The schedule won't get any easier this week when the Bombers face city rival Elder (4-1).

34. Prattville (Prattville, Ala.)
Record:
3-1
Points: 80
Previous rank: 34

Quarterback Sam Gibson passed for a pair of touchdowns and rushed for another, and Prattville reinforced its No. 1 state ranking with a 31-0 victory over previously undefeated Wetumpka.

35. Northside (Warner Robins, Ga.)
Record:
4-0
Points: 80*
Previous rank: 38

The Eagles topped the Valdosta Wildcats 28-14 in a key Peach State matchup. Senior running back Xavier Bacon rushed for 161 yards and three scores. The victory extended the Eagles' win streak to 34 consecutive games. This was Northside's first win in school history over the storied Valdosta program. On Friday night, Northside will clash with Houston County.

36. Permian (Odessa, Texas)
Record:
3-0
Points: 79
Previous rank: 35

Friday night was homecoming for the Permian Panthers, and running back Sherard Ray put himself into late contention for the homecoming king award with a huge night in an easy 47-10 win. Ray stirred memories of Boobie Miles, rushing for 277 yards (fourth-most in Permian history) and two touchdowns in the win on just 19 carries. Trevor Adams also passed for 188 yards and three scores, and Mojo rolled to 453 yards of total offense. Permian is off this week before battling crosstown rival Odessa High, which is also 4-0, on Oct. 3.

37. Broken Arrow (Broken Arrow, Okla.)
Record:
3-0
Points: 70
Previous rank: 37

For the first time since 1997, the Tigers have started 3-0 after defeating Tulsa Washington, 24-14. Continuing to fill in for injured starter Jerrod Green, junior running back Steven Hopper continues to impress. He rushed for 153 yards and two touchdowns in the win. Cale Fulps tossed two touchdowns in the first half for the Tigers, who led at halftime, 24-7. Head coach Ron Lancaster's team will once again be on the road Friday against the winless Chieftains of Sapulpa.

38. Plant (Tampa, Fla.)
Record:

Points: 64
Previous rank: 39

ESPNU 150 QB Aaron Murray tossed seven touchdowns in the first half alone for Plant, and the Panthers trounced Middleton 56-14. Murray, who watched nearly all of the second half on the sidelines, connected on 18 of 26 passes for 392 yards. Senior TE Orson Charles caught five passes for 119 yards and three touchdowns. This week, Plant will travel across town to play Riverview.

39. Stone Bridge (Ashburn, Va.)
Record:
4-0
Points: 59
Previous rank: 41

The three Virginia teams in the FAB 50 are putting up staggering offensive performances, and Stone Bridge had the best of them all last week. The Bulldogs set a school scoring record in a 64-13 thrashing of Loudoun Valley. For the second consecutive week, Stone Bridge topped the 60-point mark. Daniel Allen scored four touchdowns, and quarterback Patrick Thompson threw four TD passes in the rout. Six different Stone Bridge players scored touchdowns.

40. John Curtis (River Ridge, La.)
Record:
2-1
Points: 55
Previous rank: 40

After its inside game was held in check, J.T. Curtis went outside en route to a 28-7 victory over Salmen. Big rushing plays opened the door for Evan Ingram's two first-half scores, as Curtis went up 14-0 by halftime. The lead grew to 28-0 until late in the fourth quarter. The day after the Salmen contest, standout lineman Mike Henry (6-6, 270) verbally committed to Tulane.

41. Crespi (Encino, Calif.)
Record

42. Blue Springs (Blue Springs, Mo.)
Record:
4-0
Points: 37
Previous rank: 42

The Wildcats avoided a letdown after their win two weeks ago against Rockhurst by dominating Lee's Summit 37-21. Sophomore running back Darrian Miller continued to prove he's for real by rushing for 138 yards and three touchdowns on 24 carries. In the past two games, Miller has racked up 314 rushing yards and six scores on 55 carries. But Miller and Blue Springs will be tested Friday night when they take on unbeaten Raymore-Peculiar.

43. North Penn (Lansdale, Pa.)
Record:
4-0
Points: 36
Previous rank: 47

In the first of three games against Central Bucks schools, North Penn cruised to a 31-14 win over Central Bucks South. Senior Ronnie Akins was practically a one-man show for the Knights. He caught two touchdown passes from senior quarterback Justin Davey and ran for another score. Akins is the younger brother of former North Penn star and current Boston College standout Kevin Akins. North Penn will play Central Bucks East on Friday, then Central Bucks West on Oct. 3.

44. Union (Tulsa, Okla.)

WR Thomas Roberson set up the first score of the game with a 69-yard run on a reverse. The Redskins then got the ball right back and pulled off a surprise onside kick that led to a field goal and the 10-0 lead. Chase Boyce connected with Anthony Jones for both of his passing touchdowns. Union returns home Friday for a game against Stillwater, which is coming off its first win of the season.

45. The Woodlands (The Woodlands, Texas)
Record:

47. Rockhurst (Kansas City, Mo.)
Record
: 3-1
Points: 19
