Glenville jumps into top 10

Updated: October 7, 2008, 3:18 PM ET

ESPN will release the ESPN RISE FAB 50 national football rankings to start each week of the regular season and playoffs.

One Ohio team dropped out of the top 10 in this week's ESPN RISE FAB 50 national high school football poll, but was quickly replaced by another.

The team that fell -- and fell hard by going all the way out of this week's rankings -- was previous No. 9 Colerain of Cincinnati, which was stunned by Middletown of Ohio 42-39. Another reason why Colerain fell so far is the one win that helped propel the squad so high, which came in Week 1 against St. Xavier of Cincinnati, has diminished greatly in significance due to St. Xavier suffering two additional losses.

Voters immediately jumped Glenville of Cleveland into the No. 9 position in this week's poll. While Colerain's opening win over St. Xavier has become less significant, the opposite scenario applies to Glenville, which opened up with a close win over preseason FAB 50-ranked St. Ignatius of Cleveland. Since then, St. Ignatius has bounced back strongly and is ranked No. 22 in this week's FAB 50.

Colerain was one of three teams to drop out of this week's FAB 50, which created room for newcomers Oceanside (Oceanside, Calif.); Centennial (Peoria, Ariz.) and Good Counsel (Olney, Md.).

ESPN RISE FAB 50

The ESPN RISE FAB 50 rankings were compiled by a panel of ESPN RISE and ESPN.com high school editors, which includes Mark Tennis, Doug Huff, Chris Lawlor, Jon Mahoney, Sheldon Shealer, Ronnie Flores and Paul Muyskens.

1. Trinity (Euless, Texas)
Record:
4-0
Points: 250, five first-place votes
Previous rank: 1

The Trojans scored on seven of eight possessions and cruised past winless Fossil Ridge 45-3. After a string of tough games, Trinity flexed its muscle from the opening gun, outgaining Fossil Ridge 519-145 in total yardage and dominating time of possession. Sophomore Tevin Williams and Nebraska commit Dontrayevous Robinson led the offensive barrage, each rushing for two scores. Undefeated Colleyville Heritage is next for Trinity in a battle for District 5-5A supremacy.

2. Lowndes (Valdosta, Ga.)
Record:
5-0
Points: 245
Previous rank: 2

The Vikings made a statement that they are the top team in the Peach State with a convincing 24-7 home win over FAB 50-ranked Northside of Warner Robins. A week after being named one of the ESPN RISE national players of the week, RB/DB Greg Reid picked up where he left off with 118 rushing yards and two touchdowns on the ground. The victory extended the Vikings' winning streak to 20 games. It doesn't get any easier this week when Lowndes takes on rival Valdosta Friday in a game that will be seen on ESPNU.

3. St. Thomas Aquinas (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.)
Record:
3-0
Points: 240
Previous rank: 4

The Raiders opened district play with a 35-7 win over Hollywood Hills. Wide receiver Duron Carter, an Ohio State commit, caught a 4-yard touchdown pass on the opening drive and the Raiders never looked back. Junior running back Giovanni Bernard ran for 210 yards and three scores to pace the Aquinas ground attack. It was a great week for Bernard, who also picked up an offer from the University of Miami. Next on the slate for St. Thomas is a road contest against Cooper City.

4. Gateway (Monroeville, Pa.)
Record:
5-0
Points: 234
Previous rank: 4

It's hard to get press when you play with so many top recruits, but senior running back/defensive back Brian Williams is putting together quite a nice season for himself. A week after returning an interception for a touchdown against Norwin, Williams shined on the offensive side of the ball by rushing for 309 yards and four touchdowns on 19 carries in a 42-0 thumping of Hempfield. The Gators will play Erie McDowell on Friday in the first-ever meeting between the two schools.

5. Byrnes (Duncan, S.C.)
Record:

Points: 231
Previous rank: 5

One week after breaking the school's career rushing record, Marcus Lattimore rushed for 175 yards and a touchdown to help lead the Rebels to a 38-12 victory over Pahokee (Fla.). The win extends Byrnes' winning streak to 21 games. Byrnes travels to Spartanburg on Friday night.

6. Poly (Long Beach, Calif.)
Record:
3-0
Points: 222
Previous rank: 7

California's top-ranked team faced probably its toughest league opponent in a matchup against Lakewood (which was 4-0 on the field coming in but was 0-4 officially due to forfeits) and came out with a 32-15 victory. The Jackrabbits opened a comfortable 25-0 lead before the Lancers scored twice and cut the deficit to 25-15. However, Poly's Daveon Barner quickly turned the momentum the other way by blazing down the sidelines for an 80-yard touchdown run. Barner also scored on a 2-yard run and on a 36-yard scoring pass from quarterback Morgan Fennell. The win helped set up a major matchup in the Golden State Friday between Poly and FAB 50-ranked St. Bonaventure of Ventura.

7. Armwood (Seffner, Fla.)
Record:
4-0
Points: 221
Previous rank: 8

Shutouts are beginning to be the theme for the Hawks, who posted a 41-0 rout over Tampa Jefferson. The Hawks have now pitched three straight shutouts. Senior Quarterback Mywan Jackson has been lethal this year gashing defenses with his arm and legs. Jackson threw for 205 yards and five scores and also added 110 yards on the ground and a touchdown. On defense, Quinton Brown recorded three interceptions to lead the way. Armwood is home Friday against Tampa Bay Tech.

8. Oscar Smith (Chesapeake, Va.)
Record:
5-0
Points: 216
Previous rank: 9

Oscar Smith routed formerly undefeated Western Branch 48-7 behind the talents of Phillip Sims, Perry Jones and Tim Smith. Sims passed for 200 yards and two touchdowns, Jones rushed for a pair of scores and Smith scored twice -- one time on a run, the other on a punt return. The Tigers' victory leaves them as the lone undefeated squad in the district after knocking off their third straight undefeated opponent. Oscar Smith faces Kings Fork on Friday.

9. Glenville (Cleveland)
Record:

Previous rank: 11

The Tarblooders scored all 30 points in the first half, including a 23-point second quarter, as Glenville defeated Senate League rival John Marshall 30-6. The Bucks returned from their bye week and picked up a tough 22-14 win over Coconut Creek. ESPNU 150 athlete Denard Robinson ran for a touchdown and tossed a 46-yard touchdown pass to junior running back Cassius McDowell. The Bucks' defense also found the end zone when junior linebacker J.D. Foureau recovered a fumble and returned it 25 yards for a score late in the fourth quarter. The Bucks clash with Douglas on Saturday.

11. St. Xavier (Louisville, Ky.)
Record:
5-0
Points: 200
Previous rank: 12

The Tigers left no doubt about the No. 1 ranking in Kentucky with a 30-6 romp over defending state Class 6A champion, and previously unbeaten rival, Trinity before a series record 38,872 fans at Papa John's Cardinal Stadium in Louisville. 12. Lake Travis (Austin, Texas)
Record:
6-0
Points: 195
Previous rank: 13

Elite 11 quarterback Garrett Gilbert turned Friday night's showdown with Hutto into his own personal highlight show, throwing for a season-best six touchdowns as Lake Travis rolled to a 55-20 win. The Cavaliers needed just 14 first-half snaps to race to a 34-6 lead at the break, as Gilbert teamed up with Cade McCrary for three touchdowns. Gilbert finished the night 13-of-15 for 273 yards, and Lake Travis scored on every possession before he left the game after three quarters. Coach Chad Morris' Cavs face winless Lampasas Friday.

13. Camden County (Kingsland, Ga.)
Record:
5-0
Points: 191
Previous rank: 14

It was another blowout for Camden County, which thumped Beach 50-13. The Wildcats opened with a 36-point outburst and cruised to another lopsided win. Camden will host Groves Friday at Gilman Stadium.

Record:
6-0
Points: 182
Previous rank: 16

With sophomore running back Nicholas Parker carrying the ball 39 times for 168 yards and a pair of 1-yard touchdowns, the Tigers got past Olive Branch 21-13. That runs their consecutive win streak to 81, but it certainly didn't come easy. South Panola looked on its way to a comfortable win, jumping on top 21-3, before Olive Branch scored 10 in the final quarter to make it interesting. The close win should allow the Tigers to focus better on 1-5 Columbus Friday.

15. Lakeland (Lakeland, Fla.)
Record:

Points: 181
Previous rank: 15

The Dreadnaughts survived a late rally for the second consecutive week and escaped with a 27-21 win over Miami Killian. In their previous game, freshman wide receiver Javares McCoy scored the game-winning touchdown on a 24-yard pass to upend Boyd Anderson of Ft. Lauderdale 27-22. On Friday, McCoy had a 50-yard punt return for a touchdown and senior running back Aaron Truedell added a 23-yard touchdown run. Killian senior Lamar Miller rushed for 152 yards and a pair of touchdowns on 25 carries. The Dreadnaughts go across town to take on Lake Gibson Friday.

16. Plano (Plano, Texas)
Record:
6-0
Points: 175
Previous rank: 17

With star running back Rex Burkhead held in check most of the night, Plano turned to quarterback Carson Meger and the senior came through in the clutch, leading the Wildcats on an 83-yard scoring march for the game-winning touchdown with under two minutes remaining in a wild 38-31 win over previously undefeated Wylie. Burkhead, who had scored nine touchdowns in the prior two contests, finished off the final drive with a 6-yard scoring run, his second of the game, and also the two-point conversion to make it a 7-point lead, but was otherwise bottled up by the Wylie defense, rushing for only 44 yards on 21 carries. Meger picked up the slack, however, hitting 19 of 31 passes for 293 yards and three touchdowns. Wylie rallied from 30-14 down to take a 31-30 lead in the fourth quarter when Nikita Whitlock scored on a 10-yard return of a blocked punt, the second Plano punt that was blocked in the second half. The Wildcats are at Plano West Friday.

17. Carmel (Carmel, Ind.)
Record:
7-0

Record:
5-0
Points: 166

After having two contests against Houston-area teams canceled due to Hurricane Ike, Southlake Carroll learned that the third time was the charm as the Dragons hosted Katy Cinco Ranch and treated their visitors rudely on the way to a 42-24 win. Senior SMU-bound quarterback Kyle Padron once again led the way for the Carroll offense, completing 24 of his 36 passes for 327 yards and four touchdowns. Padron also rushed for 45 yards and a score as the Dragons totaled 517 yards of offense while the Carroll defense tallied seven sacks. The Dragons travel to once-beaten Coppel Friday.

Two of Martinez's TDs went to Nick Beasley with the other going to Ricky Marvray. Senior RB Arthur Burns also rushed for 115 yards on 20 carries and had one TD. Phoebus was the model of efficiency last week -- scoring on all nine of its possessions in a 65-13 rout of Gloucester. Junior running back Shawne Alston led the way with three rushing touchdowns as the Phantoms played for the second straight week without injured quarterback Tajh Boyd. Gloucester is the first team to score twice on Phoebus this season. Phoebus next clashes with perennial state power Hampton in a battle of undefeated teams on Friday.

25. Bellarmine Prep (San Jose, Calif.)
Record:
4-0
Points: 131
Previous rank: 27

Despite receiving medical clearance just hours earlier due to a bout with mononucleosis, senior running back Usua Amanam erupted for 237 yards on 19 carries and scored four times for the Bells in a 50-14 rout of San Francisco St. Ignatius. It was the first-ever home night game at St. Ignatius, one of the oldest schools in California, and the host Wildcats were within shouting distance at 14-7 at halftime. Bellarmine, which has given up just 26 points in its four games, put the clamps down in the second half. The Bells host Riordan Friday.

26. Bastrop (Bastrop, La.)
Record:
4-0
Points: 120
Previous rank: 30

In a 60-31 win over Rayville, the good news is that the Rams scored their highest total of the year. The bad news is they allowed 31 points after yielding just 36 in the first three wins. Bastrop trailed 19-14 at the break as Rayville's Phaquinton Lawson put on a dazzling passing display. Although Lawson would finish with 377 yards in the air, Bastrop's Romalis Whitmore (11 tackles) and Charleston Williams (10 tackles) slowed him down enough to allow Bastrop to score 30 points in the third quarter. The Rams get winless Franklin Parish on Friday.

The Cougars forced Gaithersburg into four turnovers in its first four possessions and cruised to the victory, their 19th straight overall. Each of the past five games between these rivals had been decided by one touchdown. Dawuan Genies made sure that was not the case this year. The senior tailback rushed for 120 yards on seven carries with three touchdowns and had scoring runs of 16 and 48 yards on his first two touches. Quince Orchard plays host to Walt Whitman on Friday.

29. North Shore (Houston, Texas)
Record:
3-0
Points: 108
Previous rank: 31

It certainly wasn't easy, but after 28 days of inactivity due to Hurricane Ike, the Mustangs finally returned to action and got a 26-yard touchdown pass from Alex Tillman to DeAndrew White with 26 seconds left to top Lufkin 28-21 and set a new Texas state record with a 73rd consecutive regular-season victory. The continuance of North Shore's streak, which broke the previous mark set by Southlake Carroll from 1986 to 1994, snapped another notable string, that of Lufkin's 27 straight home victories. The win was a struggle for the Mustangs, who managed only 220 yards of total offense, but the defense stepped up big-time, forcing six turnovers, and turning three of those into scores, as Terrence Kindle, Jarrod Foster and Larry Stephens all returned fumbles for touchdowns. North Shore hosts Port Arthur Memorial Friday.

32. De La Salle (Concord, Calif.)
Record:
3-1
Points: 93*
Previous rank: 32

It wasn't an opponent like the first three, but the Spartans still displayed some explosiveness for the first time this season in a 56-10 win over Granada. 36. John T. Curtis (River Ridge, La.)
Record:
4-1
Points: 77
Previous rank: 40

A season-opening 16-point loss to No. 1 Trinity is being left farther and farther behind as the Patriots scored an impressive 48-0 win over North Miami Beach. 40. St. Bonaventure (Ventura, Calif.)
Record:
4-0
Points: 54*
Previous rank: 44

It was the perfect week to have a bye for the Seraphs. First, they were able to savor their previous win over previously unbeaten Crespi of Encino, which was in the FAB 50 at the time. Record:
6-0
Points: 23
Previous rank: 50

Head coach Mike Scanlon's Raiders scored 42 points for the second week in a row and since their defense is allowing just two scores on average over that span, the ratio clearly works in their favor. 50. Good Counsel (Olney, Md.)
Record:

A well-rested Caleb Porzel put on a first-half show as Good Counsel steamrolled perennial power DeMatha 42-21 on ESPN2 Thursday. The Falcons, ranked No. 2 in Maryland, rolled up 28 first-quarter points behind the running of Maryland commit Porzel, who had touchdown runs of 7, 38 and 56 yards on consecutive runs. Porzel rolled up 111 of his 124 yards in the first quarter. Quarterback Tyler Campbell had a perfect outing, hitting all nine passes for 177 yards and a touchdown. Top prospect Jelani Jenkins got into the act with an 18-yard fumble return for a touchdown and a 1-yard touchdown run to cap the scoring. This marks the third time under coach Bob Milloy that Good Counsel has defeated DeMatha in the regular season. However, Good Counsel has yet to beat DeMatha in the league playoffs under Milloy. Good Counsel plays at home Friday against Bishop O'Connell.
