Florida and Texas All-Time Teams

Imagine Emmitt Smith in his prime trying to juke an oncoming Mike Singletary. Or how about Earl Campbell with the ball attempting to plow through Ray Lewis?

Emmitt Smith

Emmitt Smith was a star in high school before college and the pros.

This is what would happen in a mythical game between the all-time best players from Texas high school football vs. the all-time best from Florida.

ESPN RISE has tabbed all-time all-state teams from both states as part of this week's Great State Debate final. Once the voting is closed Wednesday at noon ET, we'll know which state will be crowned the nation's best for high school football.

For the teams that follow, we used the same 30-player format that we have used for many years in selecting All-American teams and all-state teams (11 players on offense with a kicker, 11 on defense with a punter, plus six multi-purpose).

Neither state is blessed with a Pro Football Hall of Famer or probable future Hall of Famer at the tight end position, so none was chosen. Instead, both teams feature three running backs and two wideouts.

On defense, in an effort to get more of the 11 best all-time players listed without regard to position, it was decided to go with five defensive linemen, two linebackers and four defensive backs from Texas, while for Florida it ended up being four defensive linemen, four linebackers and three defensive backs.

Criteria for these teams was more about what players did after high school (college, NFL) than what they did during high school. We also did not consider anyone who has yet to play at least one season in the NFL, which is why Tim Tebow (Nease High, Jacksonville) wasn't named to the Florida team, despite many in Florida who think he already might be the state's best-ever quarterback.

There was a touch of sadness when picking the all-time best on defense from Florida, since defensive lineman Jerome Brown, linebacker Derrick Thomas and defensive back Sean Taylor all died at young ages. Taylor, who died last year during the NFL season after suffering a gunshot wound from an intruder inside his home, also was a standout running back in high school, so we chose him to the all-time team from Florida in the multi-purpose category. Brown and Thomas died from injuries sustained in car accidents.

Check out our lists, and then vote for the top players from Texas and Florida.

Editor's note: For the Texas team, our own all-time All-American rankings (published twice under the title of Student Sports) plus an all-time team chosen by the txprepsfootball.com Web site and additional Internet research were utilized to choose the players. For the Florida team, we would be remiss in not crediting the All-Century Team that was chosen last year by the Florida High School Athletic Association.
