Glenville stunned in playoffs

Updated: November 11, 2008, 4:42 PM ET

ESPN will release the ESPN RISE FAB 50 national football rankings to start each week of the regular season and playoffs.

Results as of Nov. 8.

For the first time this fall, a highly ranked ESPN RISE FAB 50 squad saw its season end in a playoff loss. That would be previous No. 8 Glenville of Cleveland, which was defeated 8-7 on Saturday in the Ohio Division I state bracket by Cleveland St. Ignatius, which came into the game ranked No. 17 in the FAB 50.

How to rank teams in this situation is always tricky and the voters of the FAB 50 handled it in different ways, although none of them dropped Glenville completely from this week's rankings. Glenville could still drop out, though, since its final ranking will hinge on what St. Ignatius does the rest of the way. If the Wildcats get their 10th state title, Glenville will have an argument to be ranked right behind them. If the Wildcats don't get it done, Glenville will slide right on out with them.

St. Ignatius was ranked as high as No. 8 on some ballots, but the eventual ranking for this week came in at No. 11. The Tarblooders, who probably would have only dropped 10 spots if their loss wasn't season-ending, wound up at No. 34.

For the second straight week, only one team dropped out of the FAB 50 due to a loss, and that was previous No. 47 Naperville (Ill.) North. This week's lone newcomer is Newnan (Ga.) High, at No. 50.

ESPN RISE FAB 50

The ESPN RISE FAB 50 rankings were compiled by a panel of ESPN RISE and ESPN.com high school editors, which includes Mark Tennis, Doug Huff, Chris Lawlor, Jon Mahoney, Sheldon Shealer, Ronnie Flores and Paul Muyskens.

1. Trinity (Euless, Texas)
Record:
10-0
Points: 250, five first-place votes
Previous rank: 1

Sophomore Tevin Williams rushed for 118 yards and two touchdowns, including the game-clincher with 2:58 left to play, as Trinity completed an undefeated regular season for the fifth time in school history with a 30-20 win over L.D. Bell. While rival L.D. Bell fought hard, the Trojans never led by fewer than 10 points after halftime and dominated time of possession on the ground, rushing 44 times for 200 yards as a team. Trinity has now won 11 straight over Bell and opens play in the 5A Division I state playoffs next Saturday at Texas Stadium versus 5-5 Marcus.

2. St. Thomas Aquinas (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.)
Record:
9-0
Points: 244
Previous rank: 2

It was never a close game as the Raiders blew out Western 51-3. Aquinas head coach George Smith rotated a host of players and rested starters as the team prepares for the playoffs. Junior RB Giovanni Bernard rushed for three scores and senior WR Duron Carter added 94 yards receiving and a touchdown. St. Thomas takes on Miramar and Elite 11 QB Eugene Smith in a Broward County clash to wrap up the regular season.

3. Lowndes (Valdosta, Ga.)
Record:
10-0
Points: 241
Previous rank: 3

The Vikings capped off a perfect regular season with a 35-14 win against Warner Robins. Leading the way on offense was junior QB Khary Franklin, who racked up 191 yards on the ground. The win clinched the second undefeated regular season for coach Randy McPherson, and the third in school history. The last time the Vikings finished unbeaten they won a state title in 2004. The victory also extended the school-record win streak to 24 games. Lowndes opens the playoffs at home against Luella.

4. Gateway (Monroeville, Pa.)
Record:
11-0
Points: 235
Previous rank: 4

The Gators didn't exactly deliver a sterling performance against Shaler in the WPIAL Class AAAA quarterfinals. Nevertheless, they were able to advance after blanking the Titans 24-0. Senior running back/linebacker Dorian Bell ran for 86 yards and three touchdowns on 16 carries, while senior running back/defensive back Brian Williams ran for 188 yards. Gateway will play Penn Hills in the semifinals Friday. The Gators defeated Penn Hills 45-17 in their season opener.

5. Poly (Long Beach, Calif.)
Record:
9-0
Points: 228
Previous rank: 5

It was a battle of two undefeated clubs, but the Compton Tarbabes were no match for California's top-ranked club. On the opening kickoff, Poly's Zakeem Williams' big hit caused a fumble that was picked up by teammate Kameron Jackson and returned for a 24-yard touchdown that sparked a 40-13 victory. The win clinched another Moore League title, the school's 17th consecutive, and ran Poly's league win streak to 78 games, an ongoing state record. Poly will look to continue to work on its improved passing game Friday against Jordan.

6. Armwood (Seffner, Fla.)
Record:
10-0
Points: 226
Previous rank: 6

It was business as usual for the Hawks, who crushed Middleton 48-3. Junior RB Tavari Grant rushed for three touchdowns in the second quarter and senior QB Mywan Jackson tossed a touchdown pass to lead the rout. The vaunted Armwood defense limited Middleton to a paltry 20 yards of offense. The Hawks finished the regular season undefeated and will be the top seed when the Class 4A playoffs begin in two weeks.

7. Oscar Smith (Chesapeake, Va.)
Record:
11-0
Points: 221
Previous rank: 7

Senior running back Perry Jones rushed for 361 yards and three touchdowns as Oscar Smith stayed perfect with a closer-than-expected 34-17 first-round playoff win over Woodside. Oscar Smith rolled up 455 yards of offense, but had trouble stopping Woodside. The Tigers will face Bethel in the regional semifinals Friday.

8. Lake Travis (Austin, Texas)
Record:
10-0
Points: 215
Previous rank: 9

Marble Falls was able to control the clock with a running game that totaled 270 yards, but it was to no avail against the big-play Lake Travis offense, as Elite 11 QB Garrett Gilbert was nearly perfect once again in a 54-14 victory. The Texas-bound senior completed 21 of 24 passes for 358 yards and six touchdowns, with four of the scores going to his favorite target, senior receiver Cade McCrary. Lake Travis totaled nearly 600 yards of offense on the way to a 24th consecutive win. The Cavs host 6-3 Austin Johnson in a 4A Division II first-round game Friday night.

9. St. Xavier (Louisville, Ky.)
Record:
9-0
Points: 206
Previous rank: 10

Kentucky's No. 1-ranked team ended regular-season play with a 56-0 rout of Covington Catholic. The Tigers scored six first-half touchdowns to ignite the romp. Senior running back Deuce Finch rushed 14 times for 155 yards and three scores. Senior QB Matthew Brutscher teamed with Stephen Goodwin on a 23-yard TD pass to start the scoring and added a nine-yard TD run. Junior QB Brian Buehler scored on a 36-yard run and passed to senior TE Brian Bausher on an 11-yard scoring play. The Tigers open the Class 6A playoffs Friday vs. Nelson County.

10. Camden County (Kingsland, Ga.)
Record:
10-0
Points: 201
Previous rank: 11

The regular-season finale was a tune-up for the Wildcats, who easily dispatched Bradwell Institute 31-0. RBs Andre Johnson and Greg Baker rushed for scores in the easy win. The Wildcats outscored their final four opponents 242-14. Camden draws Creekside in the first round of the playoffs.

11. St. Ignatius (Cleveland)
Record:
11-1
Points: 200
Previous rank: 17

The Wildcats turned two field goals and a safety into an 8-7 state Division I playoff win over previously unbeaten, and FAB 50-ranked, Glenville. The win was the 11th in a row for the nine-time state champions, who got revenge on the Tarblooders for a 20-17 defeat on opening day. Seamus Hennessey kicked two field goals, including a 37-yarder, with 6:11 remaining for the win. The Wildcats blocked three Tarblooder kicks in the first half of the defensive struggle. St. Ignatius will play Strongsville on Saturday in the regional title game.

12. South Panola (Batesville, Miss.)
Record:
11-0
Points: 199
Previous rank: 12

All you need to know about the Tigers heading into the Class 5A playoffs are the numbers. Numbers like a nation-leading 86 consecutive wins, for starters. Or seven, as in finishing off their seventh straight perfect regular season with a 55-0 victory over DeSoto Central. Magnolia State fans wish South Panola could play 4A powers Wayne County or Noxubee; instead, they'll open the playoffs against Provine from Jackson, which is coming off an emotional 15-12 loss to Clinton.

13. Centennial (Corona, Calif.)
Record:
9-0
Points: 192
Previous rank: 13

Toward the end of Friday's game against Santiago of Corona, Centennial fans got a scare when All-American linebacker Vontaze Burfict was taken off the field in an ambulance. It was just a precautionary measure and he should be ready to go against rival Norco. Santiago was highly regarded in the preseason, but hasn't lived up to its advance billing so far, as Centennial built a 35-3 halftime lead before pulling out a 42-30 victory. Centennial will look to clinch the top seed in the CIFSS Inland Division playoffs with a win over its bitter rival.

14. Phoebus (Hampton, Va.)
Record:
11-0
Points: 182
Previous rank: 15

Senior RB Shawne Alston ran wild and Phoebus ran away with a 63-6 playoff win over Churchill in first-round action. Alston had 234 yards and a pair of touchdowns. The Phantoms' defense got in on the scoring with a pair of interception returns for touchdowns. Phoebus faces Green Run on Friday.

15. Lakeland (Lakeland, Fla.)
Record:
9-0
Points: 180
Previous rank: 14

Sophomore WR Javares McCoy hauled in a 30-yard touchdown reception with less than a minute left in the game to give the Dreadnaughts a 21-14 win and the District 6 championship. McCoy has caught three game-winning touchdowns so far this season. The Dreadnaughts were looking for payback after losing to Kissimmee Osceola a year ago. Lakeland concludes the regular season this week against crosstown rival Kathleen.

16. Skyline (Sammamish, Wash.)
Record:
10-0
Points: 175
Previous rank: 16

Graham-Kapowsin was able to hang close for most of the first half, holding the unbeaten Spartans to just seven points with 25 seconds left to play in the half. That's when the Spartans got the break they needed to change the momentum of the game. Facing fourth and long, the Eagles were forced to punt, but the snap sailed over the punter's head and junior DB Tait Stephens was able to scoop up the loose ball and cruise into the end zone to give the Spartans a 14-0 halftime lead. That's all the Spartans needed in their 30-7 victory. Junior QB Jake Heaps was 18-of-26 for 238 yards and two scores, both to standout WR Gino Simone. Next the Spartans, who have now won 24 straight games, will face Federal Way in the opening round of the 4A state playoffs.

17. North Shore (Houston)
Record:
8-0
Points: 168
Previous rank: 20

West Brook and star running back Christine Michael looked like they would test North Shore's long regular-season winning streak as the back rushed for 54 yards and scored on the game's opening possession. It was all North Shore after that, however, as the Mustangs forced seven turnovers and held Michael to six yards the rest of the way in a 41-13 win, their 78th consecutive regular-season victory. Junior RB Tracy Woods ran for 188 yards and two TDs on just 13 carries to lead North Shore, who opens the postseason Friday against 8-1 Deer Park.

18. Elder (Cincinnati)
Record:

Points: 163
Previous rank: 18

Tony Miliano kicked a 31-yard field goal with 2:09 left to play to give the Panthers a 13-10 victory over Clayton Northmont in the state Division I regional semifinals. Miliano earlier kicked a 22-yard field goal to force a 10-10 tie with 8:04 left. The win advances Elder to play regionally ranked Colerain on Saturday in the regional finals.

19. Maryville (Maryville, Tenn.)
Record:
11-0
Points: 159
Previous rank: 19

Senior receiver Chris Jordan threw for a touchdown and also caught one as Maryville defeated Cleveland 35-12 in the first round of the playoffs. The win extends the Rebels' winning streak to 71 consecutive games. Maryville will host West in the second round Friday.

20. Don Bosco Prep (Ramsey, N.J.)
Record:
7-1
Points: 153
Previous rank: 21

For the second straight week, Don Bosco took on one of New Jersey's top teams, and for the second straight week, the Ironmen dominated. After cruising past Bergen Catholic, Don Bosco toppled previously undefeated St. Joseph Regional 35-6. St. Joseph had allowed only 13 total points in its seven previous games. The Ironmen dominated behind a rushing attack that saw senior running back Dillon Romain and senior quarterback Brett Knief each top the 100-yard mark. Romain ran for 137 yards and four touchdowns on 23 carries as Don Bosco tallied 28 second-half points. Don Bosco will begin play in the Non-Public Group IV playoffs against an opponent to be determined.

Previous rank: 22

Permian rallied from a rare halftime deficit to top Midland 28-21 and complete an undefeated regular season. Senior RB Sherard Ray ran for 177 yards and a TD to power the Panthers' ground game. El Dorado, a 6-4 team, visits Friday night in a 5A Division I first-round game.

22. Stone Bridge (Ashburn, Va.)
Record:
11-0
Points: 146
Previous rank: 23

Seven players scored touchdowns as Stone Bridge rolled to a 58-7 win over Thomas Jefferson in a first-round playoff game. Interestingly, Stone Bridge took a 9-0 lead without benefit of one offensive play. Stone Bridge recorded a safety and returned the ensuing kickoff for a touchdown to build in a 23-point first quarter. In two games against Jefferson, Stone Bridge scored 128 points. Stone Bridge faces Mount Vernon on Friday.

23. Dorman (Roebuck, S.C.)
Record:

Record:
10-0
Points: 127
Previous rank: 28

The Falcons completed their second undefeated regular season in five years with a 44-0 thrashing of league rival Archbishop Carroll (D.C.). Good Counsel last went 10-0 in regular-season play during the 2004 season and suffered a heartbreaking last-second loss to DeMatha in the championship game. This year's Falcons have a chance to post the program's first 12-0 season. Good Counsel faces Bishop McNamara in Friday's WCAC semifinals.

26. De La Salle (Concord, Calif.)
Record:
8-1
Points: 124
Previous rank: 26

NorCal's top program for the past 30 years continues to impress following its loss to FAB 50-ranked Don Bosco Prep earlier this season, and is the odds-on favorite to represent the North in the CIF Open Division Bowl Game. Last week, the Spartans rolled over San Ramon Valley 44-7 as Arizona-bound RB Kylan Butler scored on runs of 20 and 75 yards in the first quarter alone. The win clinched De La Salle's first East Bay Athletic League title and its first league crown since 1997, as they began playing a quasi-independent schedule the following season. DLS closes its regular season against a tough California of San Ramon team.

27. Plant (Tampa, Fla.)

Record:
9-1
Points: 108
Previous rank: 30

Junior QB Sam Gibson wasted no time in getting the Lions' offense moving in their 55-19 6A playoff-opening victory over Smiths Station. Gibson completed four of his first five passes for TDs of 29, 31, 15 and 47 yards as Prattville rolled to a 41-0 lead at intermission and gave the starters a rest in the second half. Senior running back Jerodis Williams added 29 and nine-yard TDs before scampering 74 yards for a score in the third. He exited with 173 yards on just nine carries. It was the eighth straight home playoff win for the Lions, but it figures to get a lot tougher Friday when Prattville hosts Opelika (8-2) in a second-round game

30. Abilene (Abilene, Texas)
Record:
10-0
Points: 107
Previous rank: 31

The Eagles got an unexpected test from 4-5 North Crowley on Friday night, as the Panthers outgained Abilene and had them on the ropes until Zach Bass' late 91-yard TD run iced a 20-10 victory. Abilene was placed in the Class 5A Division II state playoffs, where the Eagles should be the favorite. They take on 6-4 Mansfield in the first round.

31. Byrnes (Duncan, S.C.)
Record:
10-1
Points: 102
Previous rank: 32

Byrnes defeated Boiling Springs 42-6 with the help of several players. Nick Jones, Marcus Lattimore and Riyahd Richardson all scored touchdowns in the Rebels' regular-season-ending win. Byrnes opens the playoffs with a home game against Spartanburg.

Curtis rolled up 493 yards in total offense, 354 on the ground, led by senior RB Marchez Patterson's scoring jaunts of six, four and nine yards. Junior WR Jonathan McKnight had TD catches of 4 and 38 yards from Evan Ingram against a team that came in with a glittering 7-1 record. Curtis opens the 32-team 2A bracket against 5-5 Ferriday.

The Hawks advance to face Barrington on Saturday.

34. Glenville (Cleveland)
Record:
11-1
Points: 82*
Previous rank: 8

Season over. The Tarblooders were handed their first loss of the season in the state Division 1 playoffs as FAB 50-ranked St. Ignatius avenged a season-opening setback. Senior quarterback Terrance Owens hit Mike Edwards on a 35-yard third-quarter TD pass for the game's only touchdown. Glenville, which was seeking its first state title, ended its season in the regional semifinals.

35. Madison County (Madison, Fla.)
Record:
8-0
Points: 82*
Previous rank: 36

There wasn't a hangover from last week's impressive win against Godby, as the Cowboys destroyed Dixie County 54-0. Senior LB Quanta Barfield scored on a fumble recovery and senior DL Jacobbi McDaniel recorded seven tackles and two for loss. The offensive got involved, too, as senior RB Chris Thompson ran for 195 yards on nine carries and a touchdown. Madison County welcomes Wakulla to Boot Hill Stadium on Friday.

36. Oceanside (Oceanside, Calif.)
Record:
9-0
Points: 71
Previous rank: 37

The Pirates thought they might find resistance for the first time in league play, but that didn't happen as they led Valley Center 28-21 at halftime before taking over in a 79-21 win. Oceanside used its running game to overpower Valley Center with 299 yards, including a 154-yard, two-touchdown performance from junior Rene Siluano. Colorado-bound quarterback Jordan Wynn completed 10 of 18 passes for 132 yards and two touchdowns and even played in the second half for a change as the Pirates, who close out the regular season with Ramona, upped their winning streak to 21 games, tied for third-longest in CIF San Diego Section history.

37. St. Bonaventure (Ventura, Calif.)
Record:
8-1
Points: 70
Previous rank: 38

A 56-9 victory over Dos Pueblos was the Seraphs' 60th consecutive league victory and the 197th straight game in which they scored. Look for those streaks to continue this week as St. Bonaventure, which has lost only to No. 5 Poly, takes on 3-6 San Marcos before entering the CIFSS Northern Division playoffs as the prohibitive favorite.

38. South Pointe (Rock Hill, S.C.)
Record:
11-0
Points: 66*
Previous rank: 39

Senior QB Stephon Gilmore rushed for 119 yards and threw for 142 more and accounted for two touchdowns as South Pointe defeated Rock Hill 31-10. The win gave the Stallions the Region 4A championship. South Pointe will host West Florence in the first round of the state playoffs.

Record:
9-1
Points: 66*
Previous rank: 35

Brown's scoring run put Allen up 21-14 in the third quarter and Jeremiah Williams followed with a 23-yard scoring jaunt to push the margin to 28-14. Allen opens postseason play Friday against a 7-3 South Grand Prairie squad, and could be staring at a state quarterfinal matchup with Permian down the line.

40. Rockhurst (Kansas City, Mo.)
Record:
10-1
Points: 57
Previous rank: 44

Rockhurst provided perhaps the most surprising result of the weekend when it crushed Blue Springs 48-0 in the Class 6 sectional finals. It wasn't the win that was the shocker it was how easily the Hawklets dispatched of a Blue Springs team that had handed them their only loss of the year. Senior quarterback Nathan Scheelhaase delivered arguably his finest game of the season by throwing four touchdown passes and rushing for another score. Next up for Rockhurst is a date with Blue Springs South in the Class 6 state quarterfinals Friday. The Hawklets opened their season by defeating Blue Springs South 42-14. However, the Jaguars have since won nine out of their past 10 games.

41. Centennial (Peoria, Ariz.)
Record:
10-0
Points: 53
Previous rank: 41

Once again the Coyote defense was the story, as Centennial roared past Ironwood Ridge 44-0. It was Centennial's fourth straight shutout, and over that same span the Coyotes have put 151 points on the board. They have allowed only 54 points all season, and here's good news for the rest of the state: All six linemen over 220 pounds are juniors. John Hughes scored five times, four on runs of 3, 55, 5 and 7 yards in addition to a 36-yard scoring reception from Dane McFarland. Up next will be Kofa in the opening round of the Class 5A Division II playoffs.

42. Cretin-Derham Hall (St. Paul, Minn.)
Record:
12-0

Previous rank: 40

The Raiders exploded to a 42-0 halftime lead en route to a 49-7 victory over Lakeville South in the state Class 5A quarterfinals. Junior quarterback Mark Alt completed 8 of 10 passes for 247 yards and five touchdowns -- all in the first half. Senior RB Marcus Binns rushed 21 times for 160 yards and two scores. The Raiders will play Blaine in the semifinals. Blaine ended the 39-game win streak of two-time defending state champion Eden Prairie.

43. Union (Tulsa, Okla.)
Record:
9-1
Points: 41
Previous rank: 42

Since everyone in Oklahoma figures Union will play Jenks for the 6A title in a few weeks, it should be easy to make some comparisons after this week. That's because the Chase Boyce-led Redskins, who beat Enid 40-0 to end the regular season, open the playoffs against Sand Springs. The Sandites fell to Jenks last week 56-28, and just to make the circle complete, Jenks will open the postseason with Enid. The Redskins, who are averaging 52.8 points a game, have won nine straight since losing the season opener to Broken Arrow, and have beaten four of the state's top 10 teams along the way.

44. Northside (Warner Robins, Ga.)
Record:
9-1
Points: 32
Previous rank: 43

Senior RB Xavier Bacon rushed for 195 yards and four touchdowns as Northside's defense intercepted four passes en route to a 31-7 win over Colquitt County. The defending Class 4A state champions made the move to 5A this season and finished the regular season with a lone loss to FAB 50 No. 3 Lowndes. Northside will host Union Grove (8-2) to open the postseason.

45. Independence (Charlotte, N.C.)
Record:
10-0
Points: 30
Previous rank: 45

Junior quarterback Anthony Carrothers completed 18 of 25 passes for 265 yards and a touchdown as Independence defeated Butler 42-31. Carrothers also rushed for 68 yards and two touchdowns in a win that clinched the Southwestern 4A championship and the No. 1 seed in the state playoffs. The Patriots will open the postseason by hosting West Mecklenburg.

46. Center Grove (Greenwood, Ind.)
Record:
11-1
Points: 25*
Previous rank: 46

The Trojans rolled out to a 41-0 halftime cushion before recording a 55-16 romp over Bloomington North in a state Class 5A section title game. The Trojans rushed for 525 yards, including 334 from Tanner Riley and Luke Swift. Riley ran for 201 yards and TDs of 74 and 82 yards in the first half. Swift gained 133 yards and scored three TDs of 69, 26 and 9 yards. The Trojans tackle Castle in the regional.

47. Notre Dame (Sherman Oaks, Calif.)
Record:
9-0
Points: 25*
Previous rank: 49

Junior QB Ryan Kasdorf continues to impress as he has now passed for a single-season school-record 30 touchdowns after collecting four more in a 34-0 victory over Loyola of Los Angeles. He completed 18 of 23 passes for 275 yards, with three of his scores going to James Flynn, who has now caught a school-record 16 TD passes. They host Bishop Amat on Friday in the driver's seat for the Serra League title and a possible top-two seed in the CIFSS Pac-Five Division playoffs, with No. 5 Poly likely to be slated in the opposite bracket.

48. Jenks (Jenks, Okla.)
Record:
9-1
Points: 19
Previous rank: 48

The Trojans would really like a rematch with No. 43 Union (which handed Jenks its lone loss in Week 2), but first things first. Like a 56-28 rout of Sand Springs in which sophomore QB Sawyer Kollmorgen tossed for three touchdowns to balance the offense, while junior RB Cory Jones rushed for 138 yards on 13 carries and reserve Zach Langer added 136 on 11 with both scoring two touchdowns. The 28 points allowed was the most given up by Jenks all season, as the Men of Troy have yielded just 91 all season. You can bet coach Allan Trimble would like an even more impressive win over Enid than Union posted last week.

49. Bellevue (Bellevue, Wash.)
Record:
10-0
Points: 8
Previous rank: 50

Bellevue had no trouble with a tired Sedro Woolley team. Having to play on Tuesday and Thursday just to get to face Bellevue was too much for the Cubs. Eleven different running backs carried the ball for the Wolverines, who racked up 342 rushing yards in the 48-10 romp. Next Bellevue, winner of five of the past seven Class 3A state titles, will host Lindbergh in the opening round of the state tournament.

50. Newnan (Newnan, Ga.)
Record:
10-0
Points: 7
