Editor's note: ESPN will release the ESPN RISE FAB 50 national football rankings to start each week of the regular season. The rankings combine three previously independent polls and are compiled by a panel of voters, including Doug Huff (Wheeling, W.Va.), Jon Mahoney (Brooklyn, N.Y.), Sheldon Shealer (Myersville, Md.), Brian Stumpf (Torrance, Calif.) and Mark Tennis (Stockton, Calif.). Kynon Codrington, Christopher Lawlor, Mike Loveday, Bob Masajo and Paul Muyskens also contributed to the poll.
There was little change in the top 25 in this week's ESPN RISE FAB 50 national football poll, but the second half of the rankings saw major shakeups.
Abilene (Texas) was the highest-ranked team to drop from this week's rankings, as it was stunned in the opening round of the Class 5A Division II state playoffs, 20-14, by Mansfield. Despite being 10-0 and ranked highest overall in the field, the Eagles lost to a Mansfield team that was 6-4. The Tigers do, however, have a highly regarded running back in Stanford-bound Stepfan Taylor, who rushed for 195 yards and scored twice.
In addition to Abilene, which was No. 30 in last week's FAB 50, previous No. 36 Oceanside of California, previous No. 40 Rockhurst of Missouri and previous No. 42 Cretin-Derham Hall of Minnesota all dropped out of this week's rankings.
Oceanside did not lose, but the Pirates did have their 21-game win streak end in a 33-33 tie with Ramona. The team now has a 21-0-1 unbeaten streak.
Rockhurst lost 14-9 to a Blue Springs South squad that it defeated in its Labor Day weekend opener.
Cretin, meanwhile, fell in overtime to Blaine, 28-27, the same team that the week before had ousted defending champion Eden Prairie, 28-24, from the Minnesota Class AAAAA playoffs. This week, Blaine faces unbeaten Wayzata, which is one of four newcomers in this week's ESPN RISE FAB 50.
