Abilene stunned in opening round of playoffs

Updated: November 18, 2008, 4:08 PM ET

There was little change in the top 25 in this week's ESPN RISE FAB 50 national football poll, but the second half of the rankings saw major shakeups.

Abilene (Texas) was the highest-ranked team to drop from this week's rankings, as it was stunned in the opening round of the Class 5A Division II state playoffs 20-14 by Mansfield. Despite being 10-0 and ranked highest overall in the field, the Eagles lost to a Mansfield team that was 6-4. The Tigers do, however, have a highly regarded running back in Stanford-bound Stepfan Taylor, who rushed for 195 yards and scored twice.

In addition to Abilene, which was No. 30 in last week's FAB 50, previous No. 36 Oceanside of California, previous No. 40 Rockhurst of Missouri and previous No. 42 Cretin-Derham Hall of Minnesota all dropped out of this week's rankings.

Oceanside did not lose, but the Pirates had their 21-game win streak end in a 33-33 tie with Ramona. The team now has a 21-0-1 unbeaten streak.

Rockhurst lost 14-9 to a Blue Springs South squad that it defeated in its Labor Day weekend opener.

Cretin, meanwhile, fell in overtime to Blaine 28-27, the same team that the week before had ousted defending champion Eden Prairie 28-24 from the Minnesota Class AAAAA playoffs. This week, Blaine faces unbeaten Wayzata, one of four newcomers in this week's ESPN RISE FAB 50.

ESPN RISE FAB 50

The ESPN RISE FAB 50 rankings were compiled by a panel of ESPN RISE and ESPN.com high school editors, which includes Mark Tennis, Doug Huff, Chris Lawlor, Jon Mahoney, Sheldon Shealer, Ronnie Flores and Paul Muyskens.

1. Trinity (Euless, Texas)
Record:
10-0
Points: 250, five first-place votes
Previous rank: 1

The Trojans got 100 yards and two scores on the ground from sophomore Tevin Williams on the way to an efficient 24-10 victory over Flower Mound Marcus in an opening-round bi-district win Saturday at Texas Stadium. Trinity only totaled 277 yards, but managed 21 first downs and was able to dominate the game with a time-consuming ground attack. The win sets up a huge showdown this Saturday with formerly FAB 50-ranked Plano (10-1), a rematch of last year's state semifinal game that Trinity survived 30-27 in double overtime.

2. St. Thomas Aquinas (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.)
Record:
10-0
Points: 244
Previous rank: 2

The Raiders went on the road and dismantled Miramar 49 -2. Senior QB Ryan Becker tossed three touchdowns and added a 48-yard rushing score. The real story wasn't the Raiders' offense; it was the defense that held the potent Miramar offense out of the end zone. Miramar's Elite 11 QB Eugene Smith, a recent West Virginia commit, threw for 201 passing yards, but only 10 in the second half. Aquinas will be heavily favored going into the Class 4A state playoffs Friday against Coconut Creek.

3. Lowndes (Valdosta, Ga.)
Record:
11-0
Points: 241
Previous rank: 3

There was no suspense in the first round of the Class AAAAA state playoffs, as the Vikings pummeled Luella of Locust Grove 41-13. On offense, senior running back Gerald Demps, a Florida State commit, rushed for 77 yards and a score, while RB-DB Greg Reid pitched in with 69 yards rushing and two touchdowns. Lowndes was stingy on defense, only yielding 122 yards. The Vikings host Bradwell Institute on Friday at Martin Stadium in their next playoff game.

4. Gateway (Monroeville, Pa.)
Record:
12-0
Points: 235
Previous rank: 4

The Gators received stellar efforts from a plethora of performers on both sides of the ball as they upended Penn Hills 38-23 in the WPIAL Class AAAA semifinals. Gateway will now play Bethel Park in the finals at Heinz Field on Saturday. The Gators lost to Pittsburgh Central Catholic in overtime of last year's WPIAL championship. In the win over Penn Hills, Gateway's second against the Indians this year, senior running back/linebacker Dorian Bell ran for 121 yards and a touchdown and chipped in nine tackles on defense. Senior wide receiver Corey Brown hauled in two touchdown passes, and senior defensive end B.J. Stevens tallied two sacks, giving him 21 on the season.

5. Poly (Long Beach, Calif.)
Record:
10-0
Points: 228
Previous rank: 5

Senior RB Melvin Richardson found a hole on the first play from scrimmage and raced for a 61-yard touchdown as the Jackrabbits closed their regular season with a 29-13 win over Jordan of Long Beach. Richardson ended the night with 149 yards on just eight carries and scored two other times. Poly next moves on to the CIF Southern Section Pac-Five Division playoffs as the top seed. The team's first-round matchup is against Bishop Amat. The Jackrabbits could play FAB 50-ranked and unbeaten Notre Dame of Sherman Oaks in the title game.

6. Armwood (Seffner, Fla.)
Record:
10-0
Points: 226
Previous rank: 6

The Hawks and their run-stuffing, pass-denying defense were idle this week. The Class 4A state playoff bracket was released and pits Armwood against Winter Haven on Friday.

7. Oscar Smith (Chesapeake, Va.)
Record:
12-0
Points: 221
Previous rank: 7

Junior QB Phillip Sims continued his assault on the record books, and Oscar Smith rolled to another win with a 35-6 playoff victory over Bethel. Oscar Smith next faces Ocean Lakes for the East Region Division 6 final in a contest pitting a pair of undefeated teams. Against Bethel, Sims upped his career totals to 6,850 passing yards and 79 touchdowns, which, according to The Virginian-Pilot (Norfolk, Va.), ranked fifth in Virginia High School League history. Tim Smith was the star of the game, though, hauling in three touchdown passes from Sims and returning a punt for a touchdown.

8. Lake Travis (Austin, Texas)
Record:
11-0
Points: 215
Previous rank: 8

First-round state playoff opponent LBJ High out of Austin was probably figuring that howling winds would be of some help in trying to slow down Lake Travis' pass-happy offense Friday night. Instead, the winds just gave standout QB Garrett Gilbert an opportunity to show off another side of his game, as the Texas-bound senior ran for four first-half touchdowns and 102 yards in an easy 55-14 victory. Gilbert accounted for seven total TDs, also passing for three scores while completing 18 of 24 passes for 267 yards despite the windy conditions. Lake Travis takes on 10-1 Cibolo Steele on Friday.

9. St. Xavier (Louisville, Ky.)
Record:
10-0
Points: 210
Previous rank: 9

The Tigers opened the state Class 6A playoffs with a 72-7 rout of Nelson County. State player of the year candidate Deuce Finch rushed for 134 yards, and Brian Buehner contributed 106 yards as St. Xavier flexed its postseason muscles. Next up for Kentucky's No. 1-ranked team is city rival Pleasure Ridge Park, a 57-6 regular-season victim of the Tigers.

10. Camden County (Kingsland, Ga.)
Record:
11-0
Points: 203
Previous rank: 10

It was another week and another lopsided win for the Wildcats, who crushed Creekside 49-0. The competition figures to pick up Friday at Gilman Stadium, as Camden will host Northside in a 5A showdown. Northside also has been in the FAB 50 national rankings for the entire season.

11. St. Ignatius (Cleveland)
Record:
12-1
Points: 199
Previous rank: 11

The Wildcats captured their 12th straight victory, and a Division 1 regional title, with a 37-0 blanking of Strongsville. The nine-time state champions have outscored their 12 opponents by a 423-80 margin since opening the season with a final-play 20-17 loss to FAB 50-ranked Glenville. Against Strongsville, senior QB Andrew Holland passed for two touchdowns and senior RB Mike Anter rushed 27 times for 126 yards and two scores. The Wildcats will play North Canton Hoover in the semifinals Saturday.

12. South Panola (Batesville, Miss.)
Record:
12-0
Points: 197
Previous rank: 12

It's tough to move up when the teams above you do well, as the Tigers have discovered since riding to the cusp of the top 10. Consecutive victory No. 87, the longest streak in the nation, came after South Panola fell behind Provine 2-0 before recovering for a 20-8 victory in the 5A regionals. As long as junior RB Nicholas Parker stays healthy, the Tigers look unbeatable. Parker rushed for two TDs, and Memphis recruit Reuben Corley caught a 4-yard pass from David Renfroe, as well as a 2-point conversion. Next, South Panola will battle Northwest Rankin, which advanced by denying Tupelo a much-anticipated rematch against South Panola with a 14-0 win. South Panola escaped against Tupelo 14-13.

13. Centennial (Corona, Calif.)
Record:
10-0
Points: 192
Previous rank: 13

Head coach Matt Logan's team will begin its quest to get back to the CIF state bowl games with a first-round CIF Southern Section Inland Division playoff game Friday against Yucaipa. In Friday's 31-7 win over Norco, senior running back Arthur Burns led the way for Centennial with 27 carries for 188 yards and three TDs. Senior QB Taylor Martinez completed 9 of 21 passes for 149 yards, including a 50-yard TD pass to Ricky Marvray.

14. Phoebus (Hampton, Va.)
Record:
12-0
Points: 184
Previous rank: 14

Phoebus and region finals seem to go hand-in-hand. The Phantoms routed Green Run 47-0 on Friday to secure a spot in the East Region District 5 final for the eighth straight year. Phoebus next faces Lake Taylor, another 12-0 squad. Senior running back Shawne Alston rushed for a pair of touchdowns, and Elite 11 quarterback Tajh Boyd passed for a pair of scores in the win.

15. Lakeland (Fla.)
Record:
10-0
Points: 180
Previous rank: 15

Sophomore WR Javares "Big Play" McCoy totaled three touchdowns, two on pass receptions and one returning a blocked field goal. Lakeland will be home Friday against Bloomingdale to start the state playoffs.

16. Skyline (Sammamish, Wash.)
Record:
11-0
Points: 173
Previous rank: 16

Last year's 3A state champs are making the jump to 4A look easy in the opening round of the state playoffs. The Spartans scored on their first three possessions to take a 21-7 halftime lead, then matched those three scores in the opening minutes of the third quarter, going on to rout Federal Way 49-6. Washington State commit Gino Simone took the second-half kickoff 94 yards untouched for the score, then the Spartans took advantage of three consecutive turnovers to put the game away. Junior QB Jake Heaps was 20-of-27 for 191 yards and five touchdowns in just three quarters of play, with four of those TDs going to sophomore WR Kasen Williams. The Spartans will try to make it 26 in a row when they host unbeaten Auburn in the quarterfinals.

17. North Shore (Houston)
Record:
9-0
Points: 169
Previous rank: 17

The defense set the tone once again for North Shore, allowing just 35 yards in the first half as the Mustangs jumped out to a 17-3 halftime lead, and then senior QB Alex Tillman provided the final dagger in a 30-10 first-round win over Deer Park by hooking up with junior WR DeAndrew White for his second touchdown of the game. Regionally ranked Hightower, led by Miami-bound QB A.J. Highsmith, should be quite a test for the Mustangs on Friday, as the Hurricanes average over 40 points a game and surrender under nine per contest.

18. Elder (Cincinnati)
Record:
12-1
Points: 165
Previous rank: 18

The Panthers, appearing in their 13th state playoff, outlasted city rival Colerain 27-20 in two overtimes to capture a Division 1 regional title. The win extends Maryville's winning streak to 72 games, currently the second-longest in the nation. The Rebels will face Rhea County next in their bid for a fifth straight Class 4A state title.

20. Don Bosco Prep (Ramsey, N.J.)
Record:
8-1
Points: 151
Previous rank: 20

The Ironmen had no trouble in dispatching Paul VI 65-6 in the first round of the Non-Public Group IV playoffs. Touchdown machine Dillon Romain, a senior running back, ran for 107 yards and three scores, and recovered a blocked punt for another score. Romain had four touchdowns last week. Meanwhile, junior running back Tony Jones ran for two touchdowns against Paul VI. Don Bosco will now take on St. Peter's Prep in the semifinals Friday. The Ironmen have beaten St. Peter's in the finals the previous two seasons.

21. Permian (Odessa, Texas)
Record:
11-0
Points: 149
Previous rank: 21

Permian had a much easier time of things than some other Texas powers in the first round of the 5A Division I playoffs, cruising past El Dorado 62-14. Senior QB Trevor Adams had his best game of the year to date for the Panthers, hitting 17 of 19 passes for 307 yards and four scores, two of them going to Ryan Rumbaugh, who caught eight balls for 172 yards. Senior WR Alan Castillejos also rushed for three scores and caught a fourth for Permian, which faces 5-6 Burleson on Friday. A Panthers win could set up a possible FAB 50 battle with Allen the following week.

22. Stone Bridge (Ashburn, Va.)
Record:
12-0
Points: 147

Junior quarterback Patrick Thompson made his return Friday, but it was the running of senior RB Daniel Allen that sparked the team's 42-0 victory over Mount Vernon in the North Region District 5 semifinals. Apparently there's no stopping Good Counsel. The Falcons rolled to their 11th straight victory, a 45-6 thrashing of Bishop McNamara in the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference semifinals. Good Counsel and DeMatha will meet for the WCAC title Saturday. It marks the sixth straight year these teams have squared off in the final. Good Counsel returned a pair of interceptions for touchdowns, recovered a fumble for a score, had star running back Caleb Porzel break a 62-yard touchdown and converted a field goal attempt.

27. De La Salle (Concord, Calif.)
Record:
9-1
Points: 118
Previous rank: 26

In a game against a team that head coach Bob Ladouceur compared to Don Bosco Prep of New Jersey, the Spartans broke a 14-14 tie in the fourth quarter and went on to turn back California of San Ramon 21-14 in their regular-season finale. Senior RB Khyri Knowles scored the game-winner on a seven-yard run with 3:53 left, and the DLS defense took it from there. Fellow senior Kylan Butler had 18 carries for 186 yards and two TDs to lead the Spartans. Ladoucuer's team drew a bye for the first round of the CIF North Coast Section Division I playoffs. 29. Prattville (Ala.)
Record:
10-1
Points: 109
Previous rank: 29

By scoring on turnovers on three of the first five Opelika possessions, the Lions settled matters early and a lot more convincingly than expected, winning 44-11 in the second round of the Class 6A playoffs. Scoring on a blocked punt, a fumble recovery and an interception was dessert for the Lions, who got another big day from senior RB Jerodis Williams. Williams raced 58 yards with his first carry of the game to set up a 17-3 first-quarter advantage. Williams later added third-quarter scoring jaunts of 61 and 2 yards en route to 11 carries for 143 yards. If Williams keeps averaging 13 yards a carry, there will be no stopping Prattville. Now things should get really interesting for the Lions, as the two-time defending state champions host high-scoring Auburn, which is 12-0.

30. Byrnes (Duncan, S.C.)
Record:
11-1
Points: 104
Previous rank: 31

The Patriots' offense pounded Ferriday for 282 yards rushing en route to 369 yards overall in a game they led 42-0 after three quarters. Junior RB Kenny Cain led the way with 34- and 52-yard touchdowns as Curtis broke the game open with a 23-point second quarter. 39. Centennial (Peoria, Ariz.)
Record:
11-0
Points: 59
Previous rank: 41

The streak is over. Not the winning streak, of course, as the Coyotes took care of Kofa as expected, winning 48-6 in the 5A II playoff opener to jump two spots in the rankings. No, it was the six points allowed that snapped a streak of four straight shutouts. Not that Kofa could move the ball all that much, but it did score. Facing a team you've already beaten once is not an easy task, even if the winners romped 34-7. That's the task now facing Centennial as it meets Desert Ridge on Friday. In that season-opening win over Desert Ridge, Centennial's senior RB John Hughes rushed for 160 yards on 18 carries, scoring twice. The defense was a major factor in that game as well as Jimmie Lewis, the sack leader now with 12, was credited with three against the Jaguars, while leading tacklers Austin Arias, Reggie Umuolo and Jack Ramsey debuted with quality games. Over the past five games, Centennial has outscored its opponents 199-6.

45. Newnan (Ga.)
Record:
11-0
Points: 32
Previous rank: 50

After debuting at No. 50 in last week's FAB 50, Newman got off to a fast start in its 55-0 thrashing of Johnson-Savannah. Against Rosemount, senior running back Chris Kroeten rushed for 118 yards and two touchdowns.

49. Pickerington Central (Pickerington, Ohio)
Record:
13-0
Points: 10

Being undefeated helps one get into the FAB 50, but so does playing another FAB 50 team in the semifinals of the state playoffs. That's the case for Pickerington Central, which is facing No. 18 Cincinnati Elder on Saturday. In their win over Hilliard Davidson, the Tigers scored on a fake-punt play and held their opponent without a score after it advanced twice inside the red zone in the closing minutes. Backup quarterback Josh Kristoff connected with Patrick White on a 38-yard TD pass on the fake punt for the game's only touchdown.

The Explorers jump into the FAB 50 after a hard-fought 20-18 win over city rival Killian. It was a team effort for head coach Chris Merritt's squad, as the Columbus defense held Killian star running back Lamar Miller, a Miami recruit, to just 27 yards on 19 carries, while junior Jakhari Gore -- the cousin of San Francisco 49er Frank Gore -- rumbled for 113 yards and a score to help lead a rally from 12-0 down at the start of the fourth quarter. The wild final stanza was capped when Columbus stopped Killian on a potential game-tying two-point conversion attempt with 30.5 seconds left and then recovered the ensuing onside kick. South Florida's No. 2-ranked team (behind St. Thomas Aquinas) opens 6A playoff action Friday against longtime nemesis Miami Northwestern, who has ended Columbus' season each of the past two seasons with playoff losses.
