The state championships settled No. 1 on the field, and three of the four favored teams -- Sherwood, River Hill and Dunbar -- posted victories in vastly different fashions.
Sherwood shut down Lingaore's high-powered ground attack which had led to 157 points in the Lancers' three previous outings en route to a 21-3 victory.
River Hill won a 31-6 decision over Eastern Tech, a surprisingly large margin given River Hill's top offensive player did not see any action of offense due to injury. Last year, River Hill won a 14-7 contest in the state final.
Dunbar, which was considered a significant favorite and bolted out to a 12-0 lead just minutes into the game, won 20-19 on a miracle drive and a two-point conversion with two seconds left to play.
The official and final season media state poll will be released Tuesday. It figures to be a tight three-way battle for final No. 1 between 4A champ Sherwood, 2A champ River Hill and MIAA champ Loyola.
MDVarsity.com will be the post to post the final state poll approximately 3 p.m. ET on Tuesday.
