East Region Football Player of the Week
Phillip Sims (Oscar Smith, Chesapeake, Va.)
Also named ESPN RISE National Player of the Week.
Southeast Region Football Player of the Week
Eugene Smith (Miramar, Fla.)
Smith passed for 353 yards and four touchdowns in a 34-30 come-from-behind win over Deerfield Beach Friday night at Coral Springs Stadium in the Class 6A state quarterfinals. Smith threw two touchdowns to junior WR Ivan McCartney covering 42 and 33 yards. His other two scores went to future West Virginia teammate Stedman Bailey for 61 yards and to WR Dante Chambers on a 62-yard hookup. This week, Smith will need to be even better when Miramar faces three-time defending Class 6A state champ Miami Northwestern in the semifinals.
Midwest Region Football Player of the Week
Tim Phillips (Trinity, Louisville, Ky.)
The 5-foot-5 senior running back led the Shamrocks (13-1) to a 28-21 upset victory over FAB 50 No. 8 St. Xavier (12-1) of Louisville in the state Class 6A semifinals. Phillips rushed for 182 yards and three touchdowns. He scored from 1 and 9 yards out as Trinity vaulted to a 21-0 lead early in the second quarter and added a 79-yard TD run late in the first half for a 28-7 cushion. Trinity avenged its lone regular season loss and will try for its fourth consecutive state crown, and seventh in eight years, against Simon Kenton (10-4) on Saturday. The win over St. Xavier was the third time in four years that Trinity had defeated its city rival after losing the regular season matchup.
Southwest Region Football Player of the Week
Cody Green (Dayton, Texas)
The 6-4 senior quarterback accounted for four touchdowns as Dayton downed Brenham, 42-21, in the Texas Class 4A Division II Region III championship game. Green rushed for 260 yards on 21 carries and two touchdowns. He added 71 yards and two more scores through the air. For the season, Green has passed for more than 2,700 yards and 28 TDs. As a rusher, he has more than 1,400 yards and 25 scores. Green will play in college at Nebraska and was considered one of the first significant verbal commitments for the Cornhuskers last summer.
West Region Football Player of the Week
Usua Amanam (Bellarmine Prep, San Jose, Calif.)
A week after Amanam surged for 270 yards and four touchdowns on 48 carries in his team's playoff win over Junipero Serra of San Mateo, the super-shifty 5-9, 175-pound was nearly as productive in far fewer carries as the Bells (12-1) won the CIF Central Coast Section Open Division title with a 21-0 win over Valley Christian of San Jose. Amanam scored all three touchdowns on runs of 31, 88 and 94 yards. He ended with 253 yards on 20 carries, returned kicks and played nearly every down on defense. In the three games of the CCS playoffs, Amanam rushed for 727 yards and scored 10 times. Usua is also an outstanding student who has committed to Stanford. His father grew up in a village in Nigeria before coming to America, going to college and becoming successful.
