Upperclassman Delonte White is still known as "Rook" to his teammates.
In recruiting circles, White has another title: major prospect.
The 5-foot-11, 180-pound cornerback is being courted by Maryland, North Carolina, Pittsburgh and West Virginia.
"He can tackle, he can cover, and he's an aggressive and smart player," said Knight, who took over as Crossland coach last year and immediately noticed White in the first practice.
White worked his way into Crossland's starting lineup midway through his freshman season and has started every game since.
Last year was his breakout season. In the second game, North Harford was driving toward a potential game-winning score against Crossland only to see White intercept a pass in the red zone to secure a 32-29 victory.
Although Crossland limped to a 2-8 season, White was a standout performer, and not only on defense.
"Everyone likes him as a defensive back, but he's one hell of a receiver," Knight said. Knight said White made a catch in double coverage against Friendly last season that was among the most dazzling he has witnessed in his 24 years as a head coach.
Knight expects White to be more of a presence offensively this season with rising sophomore quarterback standout Cornell Duncan.
Knight said White's impact on the program has been noticeable among the younger players.
"There's one kid who emulates him to a T," Knight said. "He wears the same number on JV and wears his skullcap the same way. They all want to be 'Rook.'"
